We have all heard the old adage, “You will never get a second chance to make a first impression.” This is true; not only in the way we present ourselves, but also in the way we present our companies.

Remember those huge lecture halls in college with more than 100 students jammed into an auditorium, or even classes of 30 kids or more in high school? How easy was it to zone out, not pay attention, or just get lost in the crowd?

Through my wireless audio feature research, I stumbled upon an emerging technology, Skifta, which is a wireless content aggregation and distribution system enabled by Wi-Fi and DLNA. Skifta, powered by Qualcomm Atheros, has been available as an Android app for some time. The iOS version just launched at CES, where a partnership was announced between Qualcomm and Tymphany, a consumer electronics ODM, to bring Skifta to more hardware devices.

A couple walked into my showroom yesterday, and after greeting them, the man described how they were in the process of putting an 18 x 20-foot addition onto their home and that they’d like to be able to use it for a media room. He then goes on to explain that they’ve had several surround systems in the past and that he has always been disappointed with the lackluster performance. They were systems that he cobbled together off-the-shelf at Big Box stores or systems-in-a-box, and they never gave him what he expected. This time, he wanted to do it right and go with a pro and make sure that he got a system that was going to deliver the goods.

A recent blog post about NuVo Technologies caught me off guard when I read it. The article made a big deal out of the Hebron, KY-based manufacturer’s decision to bypass integrators and installers to sell its new Wireless Audio System for multi-room, multi-stream wireless music. This news came as a surprise, because I had just published my own story about the long-awaited NuVo product in the January issue of Residential Systems, and the manufacturer had made no mention of a change in distribution strategy.

In my previous home, I had my “home theater” set up in a living room entertainment unit. It looked pretty good, but I had to strategically stack my components to best distribute weight and so that nothing was blocking my router (can’t live without a good WiFi connection.) The unit had an open back so my receiver would only over heat from time to time.

Droughts, heat waves, snowmageddon and now “frankenstorms”—extreme weather events like Hurricane Sandy and the tornadoes that hit Tuscaloosa and Joplin over the last 24 months are the new normal. According to the Dept of Defense, they are now our #1 national security threat.

This year I was fortunate enough to attend the Consumer Electronics Show under a press pass. The show was a mass barrage of audio and video—overwhelming at some points. It was a sea of people, products, and technology, and it is still penetrating my dreams. After trudging the floors, hotels, press events, and people, (and surviving), I have created a list of what I learned as the new girl (press girl) on the block.

How important is customer service in our industry? To me, it’s huge. I am a loyalist and if you do right by me, I will do right by you every time. I am all about building relationships and having each other’s backs… you scratch my back, and I’ll scratch yours, especially when dealing with technology-based products in a market where there are so many options and things are always changing and being upgraded.

I’m one of those guys who learns much better by doing. I do my homework, view videos, read manuals, and talk to others who have used something. But there’s nothing like getting hands-on with new products I haven’t used before.
