A game ensued to find the “perfect” song that would create the “perfect” genius playlist. (Meaning a playlist of songs we both liked). This got me thinking… how does Genius work? How does Neflix work? What makes Pandora awesome?

During my 11 years living in New York City, I rarely missed a Yankees game, whether in person, on TV, or more commonly via the tiny AM radio I carried with me everywhere. When I moved to the Midwest five years ago, my quest to reconnect with Yankees baseball has run the gamut through various technical innovations, including satellite radio, cable TV packages, my NY buddy’s Slingbox, and iPhone streaming.

There are some things that we can learn from Mr. Ice here. We must first and foremost always strive to do great work, remembering that "anything less than the best is a felony." There also things beyond the fact that many of our customers do prefer to have the “bass kicked in” as it were; perhaps tweaked up a few dB for a little extra punch and impact in the home theater (but hopefully with well positioned subwoofers and some room treatments).

After much speculation about his future, Jeremy Burkhardt has ended his brief—and obviously premature—retirement from the custom audio business with the purchase of a respected, but somewhat little known wireless audio technology company called Soundcast.

As was widely expected, the latest salvo in the battle for “next-gen” game consoles was launched on Wednesday in New York as Sony formally unveiled the plans for what it is now calling “Playstation 4,” or PS4. OK, they didn’t exactly tell us everything; to be honest there is much more that is unknown than known coming out of the event. While we wait for additional details likely to be announced at the annual gaming convention, E3, here is a quick look at what can be gleaned about PS4 from the perspective of how it impacts the world of residential systems and custom installations.

What’s your goal today? Is it to make money or just to stay busy? One of my biggest fears is to work, just to work. I don’t want to sell jobs to make just enough money to get to the next job. How can we avoid this?

Bob Brown sees potential for improvement at Thiel Audio, or he wouldn’t have taken a seat on the company’s board and agreed to serve as its interim COO. The company’s new owners, a three-man private equity group that purchased the brand from Kathy Gornik, hired the former president and CEO of Lenbrook America to add the industry knowledge that the investors lacked themselves.

We’ve all been there—you get a call from a new prospect for a small job, or to help them troubleshoot something someone else installed. For whatever the reason—you don’t have the time, the job is too small, you won’t make enough to warrant the expense of the service call, you’ve moved on to only doing jobs over (insert dollar figure here)—you turn it down, never giving it a second thought. I’ve done it dozens of times, probably knowing deep down I shouldn’t be, but I rationalize it with one of the previously listed excuses.

There are many parts of this industry that I like… there’s that moment when you turn on a system for the first time and all of the keypads spring to life, come online and start reporting metadata just like they’re supposed to. There’s that moment after you’ve “activated” all of the lighting devices and press “All On,” and all of the lights actually come on. There is the moment when you hand over a system to a client and they're all smiles and thrilled with the job that you’ve done.

You started your Valentine’s Day evening off by taking your wife to your town’s finest Italian restaurant where you shared a delicious dinner and a robust bottle of red wine. This is only a glimpse into what the rest of the evening holds for her. On the drive home, you use your iPhone to remotely access your home automation system. You close the shades, turn on the fireplace, and set your lighting scene to “Romantic.”
