This year’s “future home” will react and interact with the user, taking the smart home one step further by introducing CEDIA EXPO attendees to what is being dubbed the “intuitive home.” The pavilion will be divided into four distinct areas: eat, work, play, and health. Here are some illustrated renderings of what the exhibit will feature:

The depth of knowledge that you possess can make or break you at the point of sale.

As a general rule, I am not one that likes change. I like to float along in the same sea of comfortable, warm and cozy consistency of status quo. Slowly gliding down peaceful, familiar waters, doing similar, well-known, patterned things. If left to my own devices, I imagine there is at least an even odds chance that I would still be a golf pro, still living in the small apartment above the pro shop, still working six days a week. Miserable, and yet, somehow content in the numbing, yet comforting, sameness of it all.

Although I’ve strayed once or twice from AppleTV, I always come back to it. It is just so easy to use. Sure it costs one dollar more per movie rental, but I am happy to pay a little more for EASY.

A well-crafted demo delivers an incredibly powerful, emotional experience that can stay with someone for years. In fact, I can still clearly remember the first time I experienced a home theater system. It was not a formal demo per se, but was at my friend Travis's house. His father had just purchased a new surround system and we watched Speed on Laserdisc. (You can read more about that system here.) From the opening seconds – with the elevator cabling clanging in the background behind me – I was totally enthralled with the technology.

The Source Home Theater shares the 23rd floor in a lower-Manhattan office building with a Wall Street broker/investment-banking firm that also happens to be one of its clients.

I’m always fascinated by out-of-the-box applications for home control systems. One such example comes from a Colorado homeowner that used a Control4 system to monitor his home in the path of a Colorado wildfire, one of several that has left a wide swath of destruction across the Rocky Mountains this summer.

You walk into your office before everyone else, ready to take on the day, and just as you're settling in to get started, the phone rings. It’s a client on the other end of the line, and because technology is not a perfect science, something isn’t working right. The client yells and screams at you, demanding that someone be there TODAY! You have a choice to make. Are you nice and accommodating or are you defensive and yell right back?

Pick up any magazine, flip through any newspaper, click on any blog—there is no shortage of companies and people that are neck-deep in a terrible PR crisis. Once that damaging, and in some cases, career-ending, moment arrives, there are a number of things you can do and an even greater number of things you should never do.

A couple of weeks ago, I was called out to look at a job. The house had already been pre-wired and now that the customer had moved in, he was ready to have some audio installed to – to borrow an over-used phrase – “make the house a home.” (A nice housewide audio system has a way of doing that though, don’t ya think?
