Were you ever out at a bar or event where you got to talking with a random stranger and through your conversation realized that they knew a lot about one of the brands you installed?

A week from today, I will be walking off of a plane and stepping into the (hopefully) welcoming bosom of Indianapolis for the annual CEDIA EXPO. (Love ya, Indy, but, can't lie, looking forward to going back to Denver in '13!)

So what is your Why? Why do YOU get out of bed in the morning? I believe that for most of us, we got into this business because we were moved by it. I've heard some of these great stories from fellow custom integrators (feel free to share yours in the comment sections below). And for most of us, the reason we're here today wasn't because we wanted to be rich. It was because some experience moved us and we wanted to recreate that experience for others.

Imagine walking into a room where every single person you talk to will not only know what you are talking about when you say “Remote manufacturers are coming out with all new discrete codes by talking to cable and TV companies” but will be JUST as excited as you are by the news? This is just one of the many perks about attending one of the biggest trade shows of our industry, CEDIA.

Whether you're a Mac or a PC (and, for the record, I'm a PC), you've got to hand it to Apple. They went from a company on the brink of total irrelevancy to a market dominating innovator on multiple fronts whose stock closed Friday with a market cap crossing the $600 billion mark. Apple is beloved by consumers, stands at the paragon of product hype and desirability, and can move the market and hold pricing in a retail environment that is increasingly cutthroat.

How many of you, like me, were psyched when they came out with the very first iPhone? You waited and waited for your contract to be up so you could upgrade your flip phones for your iPhone. No sooner did you get your new iPhone out of the box and rip off that plastic seal than you started to hear the rumors about the next generation of the iPhone and think to yourself “Ugh, I should have waited for the new one!”

I’ve read the news, I’ve heard the reports and studies and I’ve seen the figures claiming the billions of dollars women spend on tech and how they are a major factor in influencing the majority of technology buying decisions. And while I absolutely believe in the importance of engaging women in the system design and buying process, and have no doubt that they are a major influence on the money being spent, I’m just not sure I totally buy into these assertions.

"F-bomb," "sexting" and "man cave" are among the newest terms that were added to the latest edition of Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, which was published this month. (You have to love a blog that opens with “F-bomb”). I'm unsure of how I feel about man cave being added. While I'm excited any time our industry gets a “shout-out,” I don't think this term is relevant.

As someone who has attended a number of tradeshows, I can easily – and honestly – claim that the annual CEDIA EXPO is my favorite. (It's held each year in September, and will be in Indianapolis from the 5th to the 8th this year.)
