Did you know that the Titanic was warned of icebergs hours before they hit? Had they listened, had they paid closer attention, we wouldn’t have this story to refer to today.

As a closer, Rivera’s job is pretty simple: he comes in at the very end of the game–usually in the 9th inning, sometimes with just a single out or even a single pitch remaining–throws a couple of brilliant pitches, gets the big out and ends the game a hero. The closer isn’t concerned with all of the drama that happened in innings 1-8, and often isn’t called in if the team is losing. The closer is about winning and is brought in once things are pretty much locked-down.

You’re over at someone’s house, say, babysitting their kids. You start browsing through their movie collection looking for something to entertain the little youngins. As you are flipping through the titles you spot an interesting sounding film. You think to yourself, “Hmm. This is the fourth movie in the series; that must mean that the first three were also good, so chances are this must be a great film! It’s probably about tool and workshop safety and maybe has some crafting tips we can try.” Confident in your selection, you pop in the disc and shout, “Hey, kids! Gather ‘round! We’re all gonna watch Saw IV!”

Did you know that for every $100 dollars spent locally $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll and other expenditures? If you spend that at a national chain only $43 remains local. Spend it online and nothing comes home.

Friday morning I woke to the sound of my doorbell ringing. I raced downstairs to greet my new iPad mini at my front door, excitedly ripped open the box, pulled off the plastic, and turned it on.

There are always lessons that can be learned from any disaster. Things like making sure that the drawer full of flashlight and radio batteries isn’t filled with batteries that have long-since been dead. Or that the “emergency candles” were replaced after that maybe-not-such-an-emergency-in-retrospect romantic candlelit bathtub session...
