Are you a PC or a Mac? Apple or Android? These are key questions that I ask my clients when deciphering the expectations they have for their integrated home systems. It helps me find out what makes them tick, so that I can give them a system they can understand.

Peter Jackson’s first film in his Hobbit trilogy—An Unexpected Journey—debuted in theaters last week, and despite huge earnings already, it’s a film that has been immersed in controversy—and one of those controversies relates directly to a certain home-theater debate that has reared its head over the past couple years. No, I’m not talking about the bewildering decision to split the story of The Hobbit into not two but three separate films (although that makes me roll my eyes). I’m talking about the decision to film the trilogy at 48 frames per second.

There’s no question that Amazon is moving a lot of TVs. I mean, they frequently sell them at prices that are at or under wholesale, you can browse through dozens of reviews and click-to-order. All of this while sipping a beer at 2 in the morning while lying in your underwear amidst the Dorito strewn-filth on your couch. And all without requiring any actual human interaction whatsoever!

This year concludes my 10th year in the audio video industry. Back in 2002 my company was selling and installing a lot of satellite dishes. We also sold car audio (I can’t say I miss those boys and their crazy thumping cars) and flat-screen TVs. These were not the flat screens of today, but the ones with picture tubes protruding from the back and flat screen in front. TV truck deliveries consisted of TVs so heavy that I couldn’t even drop them off the truck. We also had a repair shop where we fixed VHS players, camcorders, and other AV equipment.

Moving can be one of the most exciting but frustrating times in a person’s life. While most women are worried about breaking their china in a move, men are worried about their toys… speakers, TVs, and AV components. The average man on moving day has to disconnect all the wires and wrap them up, only to worry about having to reconnect them properly in his new home.

I believe that at the end of the day, technology should improve the way we live. It should make life easier. It should make life better. Fortunately, there are so many great technologies and products on the market today that do just that. During this month of chaos (aka “the holidays”) I thought it might be good to remember the technologies that make each day a bit better. Here are some of my favorites:

What do Budweiser, Coke, Omaha Steaks, Indochino, and Rolex have in common? Well, friend, I’m gonna tell you. Let's explore these companies and their basic advertising strategies and see how it affects me, the guy who may or may not be buying what they're selling, and then see how we can relate that to our own business models.
