The other evening, as I was tip-toeing on top of a chair from our dining room, using a paper clip and the smallest screwdriver I could find trying to pry loose the grille of an older in-ceiling speaker I wanted to replace without totally destroying the grille or falling off the chair, I realized just how far architectural audio speaker technology had come.

I’m not going to call myself “rich” by any means, but I will freely tell you that I hate watching movies at other people’s homes. (TV I can tolerate. Usually.) Invite me over for dinner and conversation. Invite me over to play Axis and Allies or Settlers of Catan. Invite me over to just sit around and discuss Salinger or the world of Divergent over a hard-to-find craft beer. Any of those things. But don’t ask me to see the new DVD you just rented at Redbox.

One of the big announcements at CEDIA EXPO this year was that Nest finally opening up its API for third-party integration, starting with Control4. Before the show, there was a lot of resentment and anger toward Nest for creating a product that was so cool, so cutting edge, so popular and Apple-like, and yet wouldn’t interface with all of the systems that we install. (I might have been guilty of piling some of this on as well..)

It takes about a full week to decompress from the CEDIA show. After spending three solid days wandering aisles under the uncompromising glare of arc sodium overhead lighting, and having your body bombarded with enough Wi-Fi waves to make David Banner squirm, you come home so overloaded with the sights and sounds of EXPO that it takes a bit of time to just… (deep breath)… sit back and process it all.

If you missed out on going to CEDIA EXPO or took a lot of training classes that kept you off the show floor, here’s some of the things that caught my eye.
