Totem Acoustic Celebrates 30 Years with Signature One Monitor

Montreal-based Totem Acoustic soon will be celebrating its 30th year of designing and manufacturing loudspeakers with the global launch of its Signature One monitor loudspeaker.

Montreal-based Totem Acoustic soon will be celebrating its 30th year of designing and manufacturing loudspeakers with the global launch of its Signature One monitor loudspeaker.

According to the company, the spirit of Totem’s first speaker, the Model 1, lives on in every model. But despite the similarities to the designation, the Signature One is not a “comeback” of the famous Model 1. It is an elevated, advanced monitor loudspeaker reflecting the progression of Totem’s engineering prowess.

Characteristics that propelled Totem to prominence include bass output that is especially noteworthy, considering the convenient size of the enclosure, and a phase response that provides realistic performance.

“The Model 1 will always have a special place in my heart because it launched Totem, but we’ve progressed significantly over the past three decades and felt our 30th anniversary was the perfect time to commemorate and honor our heritage,” said president and founder Vince Bruzzese. “The purpose of the Signature One was to epitomizes what Totem set out to accomplish and provide to our loyal followers. It’s a transcendental listening experience that transports a listener right into the event or medium, placing you intimately within the studio and among the artists, or makes you part of the crowd if it’s a live recording. It’s involving, intimate and embodies the Totem experience.”

Though considered a successor to the Model 1, the Signature One is unique and its superior performance defies comparison, according to Totem. The Signature One is larger and sports a 6.5-inch mineral-infused woofer and customized to excel in its new application and cabinet. Bass is meant to be powerful, yet controlled, and is fine-tuned for low frequency precision by a specially shaped port shape.

The tweeter is a 1-inch aluminum dome housed in a rear chamber that lowers resonances and adds significantly to its power-handling ability by functioning like a heatsink. Designed simultaneously with the woofer to achieve the best phase relationship, their synergy is perfected by a crossover handmade of only a few extremely precious components.

The cabinet design features a lock-mitered, monocoque cabinetry with incorporated full cross bracing and both internal and external veneering for uncompromising cabinet rigidity that results in consistent performance. Borosilicate dampening manages energy dissipation in a desired, controlled manner within the enclosure while keeping the cabinet musically alive. The front baffle’s rounded edges and the rear baffle’s angles avoid parallel faces to shape the dispersion and diffraction baffle.

“A modern spin on all things retro is currently a strong trend in production and marketing,” said Lucy Lentini, vice president of sales and marketing. “The current shape of the Mustang and Beetle are slightly updated takes on designs from the ’60s. Vintage dresses are today’s haute couture, and in our industry turntables have made an unlikely comeback. The short lifecycle for trends and technologies has bred consumer fatigue and a preference for products with a longer life-span. The Signature One, while undoubtedly an homage to our history, is a retro yet timeless design that will outperform competitors throughout its 25-plus year lifespan.”

The Signature One will retail for $2,650 USD per pair.
