Mitch Witten says that he’s been having “a blast” since Core Brands
hired him as brand manager for Niles and Sunfire. It was not only
refreshing to hear such enthusiasm about two iconic custom installation
brands, but it was comforting to hear it from someone who has just about
seen it all in this business.

Turn on NPR’s Marketplace report any weekday afternoon, and you’ll find
out the latest stock market reports and Dow Jones Industrial Average—but other than helping to gauge the mood of the typical high-net-worth
client, they don’t say much about the state of the custom install
market. A recent discussion with the president of national AV products
distributor Capitol, however, gave me one of the best signs that

This news came as a surprise, because I had just
published my own story about the long-awaited NuVo product in the January issue of Residential Systems, and the manufacturer had made no mention of a change in distribution strategy.

The “Ube” control system company that former CEDIA CEO Utz Baldwin is launching today at the DEMO trade show in Silicon Valley and on kickstarter.com, isn’t designed for the typical CEDIA-type custom installation project, but it’s not “mass market” either.

Hollywood summer blockbuster is one of my favorite traditions. I have many fond memories of ducking out of the heat and humidity during the hottest days of the year for the escapist bliss of an air-conditioned local metroplex and the latest big-budget movie.
