Said the company in a statement:
“From the initial design, we planned to offer a 4K upgrade for the Krell Foundation processor for end users looking to take that step. We paid especially close attention to ensuring that we could pass a 4K audio and video signal from the Sony FMP-X1 4K Media Server through the Foundation and then to a Sony 4K TV using only one HDMI cable. As we are close to finalizing the design and beginning production we’d like to dispel a common misconception.

The prevailing wisdom and typical experience is that it is impossible to use only one HDMI cable to connect a Sony FMP-X1 4K media server to a surround processor and then to a 4K Sony TV and pass 4K Ultra HD audio and video content. Now in our third generation of HDMI surround processors and having solved a number of difficult connectivity issues in the past, we are proud to say, that the Krell engineering team has overcome this latest hurdle.

With a Krell Foundation processor with our 4K upgrade, you will only need one connection from the Sony FMP-X1 to the Foundation 4K processor and then to the TV. You will not have to run a separate HDMI cable for video directly to the TV and another one to the processor for audio. Stay tuned for our upcoming availability of the Krell Foundation 4K.”

The Foundation 4K upgrade includes:

  • Four HDMI 2.2 compatible inputs that will support.
  • Two Channel and Multi Channel DSD support via HDMI.
  • 3D video format up to 1080p @ 60 Hz.
  • High resolution VESA Smode video format up to QSXGA @ 60 Hz.
  • On Screen Display added for status messages including volume, source, and audio format changes. Future firmware update will add set.
  • Independent Zone 2 video. (The two HDMI video outputs can be now configured to send independent video signals to two different displays. Both outputs support 4K signals being simultaneously displayed in this mode.)
