CEDIA Best of Show

Last year, we launched a new awards program to honor the most innovative and exceptional products shown at CEDIA.

Last year, we launched a new awards program to honor the most innovative and exceptional products shown at CEDIA. After a successful debut, we’ve brought the Best of Show awards back for 2015. Exhibitors were allowed to submit multiple products for consideration, but they paid a fee for each nomination. Winners were selected by panels of professional integrators and our editors based on descriptions provided by exhibitors via a nomination form as well as on judges’ inspection at the convention. This special section reproduces the nomination text (edited for length and clarity) and images submitted by the exhibitors. The awards program allows companies to tell you in their own words why they believe a certain product is noteworthy; and this section offers an excellent sampler of new technology from the convention floor.

Pakedge Device & Software BakPak 3.0 Cloud Management System

BakPak® allows companies to save on labor overhead by simplifying and automating the more tedious maintenance and management processes of networking. Its sophisticated task and management automations transform networking by increasing efficiency, minimizing errors, and increasing profitability for integrators. This is all made possible by BakPak’s refined system intelligence, which sets it apart from other remote management systems and makes Pakedge a favorite among integrators.

BakPak gives integrators end-to-end control from a distance with in-depth monitoring of network devices and control systems. BakPak does this with prioritized alerts, robust permission settings, automated network repair and mapping, easy configuration management, report logging, backup and restore functionality, and TriPlex, a unique troubleshooting system that determines the cause of the problem in case of a network outage or configuration error.

TriPlex is a built-in network diagnosis algorithm that works to find the source of network problems, even in the case of complete network outages. If the problem cannot be resolved through BakPak’s own self-healing functionality, TriPlex will report to the user the source of the problem on the network, allowing integrators to repair the issue. As it goes through these procedures it creates a log, which is sent to users as part of a weekly report. In the event that BakPak is unable to restart the system and it becomes necessary to make an on-site visit, integrators will have a list of procedures that were already attempted as well as the direct cause of and location of the problem in the network.

Should BakPak’s built-in self-healing features be unable to resolve a network failure, integrators can count on the intuitive alert system. Unlike other remote management systems, BakPak 3.0 sends precise alerts: it is intelligent enough to pinpoint which device failure caused the network to crash, instead of inundating integrators with a string of unspecific “device failure” notifications. It does this by validating all error alerts through situational-aware AI algorithms to provide accurate, usable information on which to take action.

With BakPak smart alerts, integrators group devices into one of five prioritization categories based on how critical they are to the network. They can also prioritize or de-prioritize alerts by type. Within BakPak’s device view and network map, profiles and devices are color-coded to allow users to quickly and easily note the device’s status: green if everything is up to date and working, yellow if the device is working but needs an update, or red if the device is down and needs immediate attention.

Grouped device management makes keeping devices up to date easy. Should the network need attention, Pakedge makes pushing firmware and configurations easy with virtualization. Pakedge defines virtualization as the ability to group devices together and apply settings or firmware, or even power cycle the devices at the same time. This can be done locally or across multiple jobsites. For the integrators, this means that power scheduling, power cycling, power control on POE switches and PDUs, and even system backups can be managed as groups. Tasks that used to have to be done individually can now be done with the press of a button.

Even system backups can be grouped. Instead of backing up configurations on devices individually, integrators can back up all the configurations for all the devices across the network at the same time. The configurations are then stored on the cloud for easy device replacement in case of failure. No additional setup or configuration is required; users simply swap out the affected unit and restore configurations from the cloud.

BakPak’s intelligence is not restricted solely to Pakedge devices. Intelligent device management and third-party device integration is a core part of BakPak’s service offering. With BakPak, the GUIs of third-party devices can be accessed, configured, and managed from anywhere in the world. BakPak 3.0 already boasts compatibility and support for Control4, Crestron, Middle Atlantic, and Panamax devices.

Apollo Enclosures AE6560

Aiming to address the fast-growing outdoor entertainment market with a safe and practical solution for utilizing indoor televisions in a variety of applications, Apollo Enclosures has added its largest model, the AE6560. Capable of enclosing slim LED and LCD televisions from 60 to 65 inches in size, this model offers significant savings over traditional outdoor televisions.

This new model remains true to the company’s exterior and interior design principles of durable construction and modern aesthetics with clean lines, and thin bezels, and an overall depth of just 4.7 inches. The interior space securely houses the television and provides space to environmentally store cables, baluns, HDMI extenders, devices such as Apple TVs, and various digital components.

Along with its resilient outdoor construction, characteristic of Apollo’s product line, its contemporary slim design allows the enclosure to disappear behind its role to safely protect the television and enhance the viewing experience.

The AE6560 features a powder-coated aluminum housing for a long-life finish; antireflective safety glass to cut down on glare, enhance image contrast, and protect the screen; thermostatically controlled and filtered air circulation system with dual fans to keep the TV cool in temperatures up to 122 degrees Farenheit and to prevent overheating; an internal three-outlet power bank for the fan system, television, and auxiliary device; sound ports that maximize the television’s built-in audio through two speaker grilles; and Tight Seal technology to protect the TV and cable connections from rain, dust, insects, and extreme temperatures.

The AE6560 also includes three weatherproof mounting options: an articulating wall mount, non-articulating wall mount with tilt, or adjustable-height ceiling mount. All of the company’s mounts include stainless steel hardware to ensure a safe and secure installation without worry of rust and binding.

Optional accessories include a thermostatically controlled heater module for high humidity or extreme cold climates lower than zero degrees Fahrenheit; custom-fit, durable, breathable fabric dust covers that will not crack or peel; and modesty frames for a custom-fit appearance when installing smaller-size TVs in the enclosures.

The enclosures are offered in black as the stock color; however, silver, metallic sandstone, and white are available as optional upgrades to fit almost any decor. The enclosures’ robust construction durability and mounting versatility make it a viable option for a variety of applications in both residential and commercial installations, especially when paired with a high-brightness digital display.

Compared to dedicated outdoor television models, Apollo’s solutions offer a potential savings of up to 50 percent. The AE6560 retails at $1,595 with a weatherproof non-articulating wall mount or adjustable-height ceiling mount, and $1,655 with a weatherproof, dual-arm articulating wall mount. The largest size of the AE6560 rounds out the manufacturer’s product line of three popular sizes, designed to accommodate screens from 39 to 65 inches, starting at $995 MSRP.

All models are available through the company’s online etailers and its national authorized resellers. Visit Apollo’s website www.apolloenc.com or contact [email protected] for reseller or product inquiries.

Russound TVA2.1

Russound’s TVA2.1 Digital TV Amplifier upgrades the sound of a television, bypassing onboard speakers and transforming dull flat panel TV audio while staying completely out of sight. The TVA2.1 has a very thin form factor that allows discrete mounting behind TVs, in a wall box, or directly attached to a TV mount.

The unit packs 30 watts per channel, with a separate subwoofer out. Three line-level inputs (analog, coaxial, and optical) can accommodate any TV audio source, providing easy integration while giving installers a new option for clean and balanced power to outboard speakers. A standout feature of the TVA2.1 is its simple IR remote function. The unit can be operated with any existing system remote once it has “learned” three basic commands: volume up, volume down, and mute. Whether freestanding or in-wall, the typical audio amplifier consumes enough space to warrant special placement, and it is never quite out of the way. This may be necessary when managing an extensive multi-room system, but there are often rooms where it is only necessary to improve TV audio, the quality of which is often poor without outboard amplification and speakers.

Russound’s TVA2.1 Digital Amplifier is the foolproof solution for improving TV audio without relying on a full-size, multi-zone amplifier. The TVA2.1 is ultra thin for easy placement behind the TV or in the wall, with three inputs for analog and digital sources. Its 30-watt output with a subwoofer output ensures much more powerful, higher-quality audio than what is derived from the typical TV’s audio section, yet it occupies only a fraction of the space of most outboard amps.

Basalte Eve Table Base

The Belgian company Basalte recently launched a design desk stand for its minimalistic Eve wall mounts. The Basalte Eve family consists of elegant wall mounts, available for the whole iPad family, and now also as a table base for iPad Air and iPad mini. Eve for iPad embraces the device’s aesthetics with a thin border to complement the popular tablet while fully respecting its refined design.

The new table stand extends this Eve family. The Eve frame is installed on the table base accessory, creating a steady support of the iPad on a table or desk. The Eve table base can be used in both residential and commercial applications to ensure the iPad Air or iPad mini is always within reach when or wherever you need it, and is a clean solution to replace traditional dedicated screens. Because of the iPad’s wide variety of applications, the table stand also offers a wider experience to the user.

It serves as an ideal solution for hotels or restaurants at the reception desk or as a publicity screen. In residential settings, it can serve as an extra screen in a kitchen or living room. There are no visible unsightly cables or connections, as the lightning connector is hidden and ensures the iPad remains constantly charged in a subtle way. For commercial applications, Eve is also available with security cover. The table base is available in two versions, optimized for either a portrait or landscape orientation of the iPad, and comes in two high-grade finishes: satinized and polished aluminum.

Slateplan

Readers of Residential Systems may have heard about Slateplan from our coverage of CEDIA 2015. Slateplan is intuitive, floorplan-based sales software for the home technology industry. A Silicon Valley startup, Slateplan has developed software that aims to dramatically improve the home technology sales process.

Visitors to Slateplan’s booth at CEDIA had a chance to test drive the software, and many people discovered how they could improve their own design and sales process.

“Customers are initially excited to design their home technology systems,” said Scott Marchand, CEO and co-founder of Slateplan, “However, the process of choosing products and developing budgets can be incredibly time-consuming and complicated. Slateplan software solves this problem.”

Slateplan’s solution invites collaboration, instantly adjusts scope and budgets in real time, shows clients what they should be spending on technology, and helps close the deal in the very first meeting. The software is designed to be intuitive and easily customizable, allowing a salesperson and his or her client to create a comprehensive home technology design in less than an hour, according to the company.

While there are other proposal software products on the market, they are primarily “bill of materials” based, rather than the more visual floorplan-based design of Slateplan. In addition, Slateplan makes it very easy for customers to understand what they should be spending on home technology, which gives them the confidence to quickly approve budgets for even very large systems.

“From the beginning, Slateplan was designed to reinvent an outdated sales process, making the home technology design experience better for absolutely everyone involved,” said co-founder Jason Wright. “The response from CEDIA was overwhelmingly positive, and we decided to give everyone in the industry the opportunity to experience the solution we’ve created.”

The company announced recently that it has released a free version of its floorplan-based software, providing integrators with the opportunity to try out the software risk-free.

Once integrators have had a chance to try out the free version, they will be invited to sign up for a paid “Pro” version of Slateplan that includes many advanced features not available in the free version, including full customization. To learn more, visit www.slateplan.com.
