Updated: MLB.TV Drops the Ball with AppleTV

During my 11 years living in New York City, I rarely missed a Yankees game, whether in person, on TV, or more commonly via the tiny AM radio I carried with me everywhere. When I moved to the Midwest five years ago, my quest to reconnect with Yankees baseball has run the gamut through various technical innovations, including satellite radio, cable TV packages, my NY buddy’s Slingbox, and iPhone streaming.
My latest attempt at baseball bliss comes courtesy of a new AppleTV, which was a Christmas gift from Residential Systems editorial contributor Todd Puma. Having grown accustomed to watching games on my computer screen and iPhone the past two season, I couldn’t wait to see how streamed MLB.TV games translated to the big screen as Spring Training broadcasts began.
But when I logged into my MLB.TV account via AppleTV this weekend, all I got were the final scores from the World Series this past fall, and nothing from the latest pre-season games. I tried again today (strictly for professional reasons, of course) and encountered the same problem, even though today’s Yankees/Phillies match up was live on my computer (for research, mind you).
Confused and a little frustrated, I placed a call to MLB.TV customer support where I learned that there is, in fact, a technical glitch between MLB.TV and AppleTV that is “being worked on.” I wasn’t thrilled with this news, but I was just glad I didn’t get “baited and switched” into upgrading my subscription to whatever comes after “Premium.” There are a lot of games to be played. I guess I can miss a few Spring Training match ups until the problem is remedied.
Update: On March 11, 2013, the MLB.TV application on AppleTV has been fixed and is working. This fix did not require an additional firmware upgrade.
