Linn Redefines Its DS Players with Space Optimization Technology

Every Linn DS player will now feature Space Optimization technology: speaker, placement, and custom environment optimization.

In 2007 Linn launched Klimax DS, bringing 24-bit music into the living room for the first time and revolutionizing the way music could be listened to in the home. Shortly after, in 2008, Linn released Akurate DS, Majik DS, and Sneaky DS.

Linn now seeks to redefine the DS category.

Linn now seeks to redefine the DS category. The company has made significant enhancements to the new Klimax DS, Akurate DS, Majik DS, and Majik DSM players by a new approach to clocking architecture and improved audio circuitry layouts, leading to a reduction in the number of components, shorter signal paths, and reduced jitter. Every Linn DS player will now feature Space Optimization technology: speaker, placement, and custom environment optimization.

Adapted from the optimization technology developed in its Exakt systems, this technology builds an acoustic model of the complete listening environment based on the choice of loudspeaker, the placement of the speakers, and the unique characteristics of the listening room, regardless of the speaker manufacturer and type. Using this model, performance is optimized, revealing the true sound of the music and offering an unparalleled level of personalization.

Klimax DS
Every speaker is unique. The characteristics of the enclosure, drive units, ports, and layout all influence the sound that is heard. Space Optimization models the speakers based on all of these elements, to understand how the sound from the speakers interacts with the room. Whichever speaker a customer chooses to use, his or her Linn DS player will optimize the sound.

The physical placement of speakers has a profound effect on what is heard. This is why Linn specialists establish the ideal position through careful listening–the Tune Dem method. This ideal position, however, is not always practical for everyone in the family. Space Optimization enables a Linn DS to emulate the sound of the ideal speaker position from the preferred, practical location. Now Linn DS owners can place their speakers wherever they choose and still enjoy great performance.

As sound waves reflect off the walls, ceiling, and floor, they interact, leading to peaks of increased energy at specific low frequencies.
Every room affects the sound of a music system. As sound waves reflect off the walls, ceiling, and floor, they interact, leading to peaks of increased energy at specific low frequencies. These peaks sound artificially loud, and because their increased energy takes longer to decay, they mask the music that follows. Space Optimization enables Linn DS players to optimize the sound for a room by identifying these peaks and reducing their energy to reveal the music that would otherwise be hidden.

The furnishing and construction of a room also affect the sound. Hard surfaces like glass or concrete reflect more sound energy back into the room than absorbent surfaces like curtains or partition walls. Space Optimization provides Linn Specialists with fine-grained control to optimize the system for a room’s unique characteristics. Now Linn DS owners can enjoy better sound without having to change the room.

With the ability to optimize for a customer’s speakers, their position, and their unique home environment, Space Optimization ensures that every Linn DS player delivers a truly musical performance, personalized for every customer.

Linn has always been committed to offering tailored and flexible upgrade paths to the latest levels of performance for all customers. All Linn DS and Linn DSM players now have Exakt Links to support future upgrade to the ground-breaking performance of Exakt, the ultimate destination for every customer seeking the best performance from their system.

Linn also has launched Exaktbox support for Bowers & Wilkins 802 Diamond model. Exakt enables a wide range of performance — and personalization — enhancing capabilities in design, in manufacture and in the home. Sources of noise and distortion that exist in the traditional analog hi-fi chain are eliminated so what is heard is a more faithful reproduction of the music as it was recorded.

In a system using Akurate Exaktbox, the loudspeakers are run actively, with separate amplifiers for each drive unit. The original analog crossover in the loudspeaker is bypassed and instead, the Akurate Exaktbox performs the crossover digitally, while applying Linn’s Exakt technology to eliminate distortion, correct for drive unit variation and optimise the loudspeaker’s performance for the room. Linn’s class-leading digital-to-analog conversion then ensures each amplifier is fed the highest precision signal.
