LG OLED TV Crowned 'King of TV' for 2015 at Annual Shootout

July 1, 2015
Scarsdale, NY-based independent audio video retailer Value Electronics hosted its 11th annual TV Shootout evaluation event at CE Week in New York City to determine which company makes the best TV for 2015. The shootout participants and pros test, evaluate, and compare the picture quality of the latest flagship TVs each year side-by-side, and the winner is crowned “King of TV.”

Five TV Shootout sessions were held over two days on Wed., June 24, and Thurs., June 25. All TVs were set up on an equal playing field, positioned next to each other, and professionally calibrated in ISF Day and ISF Night modes to provide a proper viewing environment for comparison. The CE Week attendees and experts were led through the different attributes of picture quality to evaluate and judge several aspects of the newest TVs from the leading CE manufacturers competing for the crown. The contenders were the Panasonic TC-65CX850U, LG 65EG9600, Samsung UN78JS9500, and Sony XBR-75X940C.

The seven attributes included in the voting ballot were black quality, perceived contrast, color accuracy, off-axis performance, screen uniformity, motion clarity, and day mode, all of which are important considerations in making a TV buying decision. The total of all seven attributes were weighted equally and then added together so staff could determine the average for each TV.

The votes were very close between the LG, Sony, and Samsung TVs, but the LG 65EG9600 OLED won against the competition thanks to its superior black level and contrast in addition to its off-axis performance. In the color accuracy, motion clarity, and day mode categories, the top three models all scored closely. The OLED did not do well in screen uniformity but won five of the seven categories and took the lead in the average of all categories.

“Consumers are advised to use the voting results to assess which criteria are most important to them and review each category to determine the TV that best matches their priorities and viewing conditions," said Robert Zohn, owner of Value Electronics.
