APC-MGE Focuses on Energy-Efficiency and Sustainability

The MySpace outage last year, skyrocketing energy prices, and broadband proliferation all underscore the need for power. Manufacturer APC-MGE says it is well-positioned to supply the demand.

Green is the new black no doubt about it. Ever since NY Times columnist and best-selling author Thomas Friedman minted the phrase, Green is the new Red, White, and Blue, last month, what is urgent is also hip in America. Manufacturers in every sector have been promoting their own green mandates to raise brand awareness and illustrate a commitment to sustainability.

APC-MGE is no exception. During its annual editors event at its Kingston, Rhode Island headquarters, the power management and cooling service manufacturer took great care to explain the companys role in the greening of the data center, its commitment to sustainable solutions, and how its recent acquisition with MGE will help it service and supply power-hungry web video applications, and indeed, Internet 2.0.

The two-day event discussed the trends and products changing the high-tech landscape, from keystrokes to kilowatts, and converging networks such as IT/VoIP and utilities. Increasing Internet service outages (such as the Myspace blackout last year), skyrocketing prices of electricity and fuels, and breakneck broadband proliferation underscore the need for efficient and reliable power and cooling, company officials stated. Products such as its InfraStruXure (the industrys only integrated power, cooling, and management solution) were demonstrated, issues such as standardization were discussed, and the curtain was lifted on residential products that are being swiftly completed for CEDIA roll-outs.

Indeed, the CEDIA landscape is a promising market for APC-MGE, according to Jason Covitz, national account manager of APC AV, the home entertainment division. Covitz and his colleagues walked us through new home and distributed systems and said that the high end (and green home theater) is exactly the category he expects will grow most rapidly in the near future. The home systems division also shared exciting innovations in universal notebook batteries (lithium-ion and polymer) and laptop transport products, claiming that the increasingly mobile lifestyle requires different kinds of power products for the next gen of computer users.

Laurent Vernery, the CEO and company president, was extremely enthusiastic about the recent merger, and stated that a continued focus on customers and critical R&D will keep APC in its leadership role as power demands increase, month by month. (Schneider Electric carries operations in 190 countries and had annual sales of 18 billion last year. APC and MGE UPS formed a $3 billion company under the Sneider Electric umbrella.)
