CEDIA 2017 Product Highlights

Trends included a continued focus on integrated voice control, and more focus on video wall technology, affordable 4K video projection, and loudspeaker evolution. Here are some of the highlights.

CEDIA 2017 saw strong growth in attendance in San Diego, with more than 20,000 home tech professionals participating in the event. Major exhibiting brands, including Lutron, Control4, SnapAV, Z-Wave Alliance, Nest, and DISH, among others, have already committed for the 2018 show, and helped drive record onsite sales for the next show. Trends included a continued focus on integrated voice control, and more emphasis on video wall technology, window shades, affordable 4K video projection, and loudspeaker evolution. Here are some of the hightlights.

Josh.ai debuted Josh Micro, a new hardware platform combining a home control processor, far-field microphone array, and streamlined user interface, all in a package that fits in the palm of your hand. Built specifically for the custom integration channel, Josh Micro uses far-field voice detection and artificial intelligence to unify home technology and redefine how users interact with their home. The tiny device is capable of running an entire home. The goal of system redundancy in mind, each Josh Micro is a full control system creating a network of multiple devices throughout the home. By changing the design model from one processor in the home to one processor per room, Josh Micro offers what its believes is a highly scalable business model for dealers. Each Josh Micro ships preloaded with Josh automation software, instantly connecting to the home’s network and automatically discovering connected devices. Integrators can configure a Josh system without custom programming. Josh integrates with Crestron, Control4, Lutron, Sonos, Autonomic, Nest, Chamberlain, Aprilaire, and Sony, and Josh voice commands are natural, utilizing technologies such as anaphora (memory), compound commands, and audio, and video “deep-linking.” While Josh Micro can use a wake word to start listening (“Hey Josh”), it can also start listening by utilizing a built-in motion sensor or a simple tap of the surface. A first in the industry, Josh Micro can intuitively understand where it is, making room-specific commands simple. Rather than having to specify a location for voice commands, simply say “turn on the lights” to activate the room you’re in. Josh Micro is the first hardware product capable of accepting compound commands, which are a string of commands issued at once, creating ad-hoc scenes on the fly. For example, “Open the shades, dim the lights, stop the music, and watch Breaking Bad.”

With new software, the On-Q radiant and adorne lighting control systems can operate QMotion Zigbee shades connected to the QMotion Qube. Compatible shades include QMotion’s Qadvanced with Zigbee Home Automation version 1.2 (HA1.2) battery-operated Roller and QMotion Qadvanced Intelligent System (QIS) Hardwired shades.

Monitor Audio’s CF230 is its most visually discreet architectural speaker system. The CF230’s pre-construction and retrofit options are key to upholding its flexibility. Once the chosen bracket is in place and the surface finished, the install is finalized by fitting the driver with just three screws and attaching the magnetic, trim-less grille with no need to cut out chunks of drywall. In a pre-construction, flush-fit setting, the result is a clean appearance with no shadow-creating edges and one which becomes even more discreet when the grille is painted to match the ceiling color. The finished result is quickly achieved, thanks to the CF230’s carefully developed pre-construction kit, which includes a more conventional preconstruction bracket. The bracket enables the cutout hole to be cut after the sheetrock is fitted. Once the plaster is dry, integrators need to sand back the area around the aperture and remove the mask to reveal a beautifully clean edge.

Colorbeam has closed out its first year marketing home-wide low-voltage lighting control systems and lights to residential and commercial AV integrators in North America, and president Michael Teolis is convinced that more integrators realize they need to turn to a new revenue generator to offset commoditization in the AV market. At CEDIA, Colorbeam said it is the only lighting company selling home-wide low-voltage lighting systems through the custom channel. Just as important, the company sells not only a system’s brains and in-wall keypads, but the system’s light fixtures and light engines, or lights, to deliver all of the components of a whole-home lighting system. The company’s products also integrate with other companies’ lighting-control systems.

sonnen, provider of intelligent residential energy storage and maker of the sonnenBatterie, announced at CEDIA 2017 that it is bringing its energy management systems to the home automation marketplace. The sonnenBatterie powers smart household devices using clean, renewable energy and increasing energy reliability for connected homes. Establishing the sonnenBatterie as a premier energy storage system in the rapidly growing smart home sector signifies the next step in the evolution of home automation in the U.S., the company said. sonnen is working with home builders, utilities, solar installers, and home automation integrators to integrate the sonnenBatterie with solar power and connected households. While the market for renewables and energy storage is young, sonnen has found that eco-forward, health-conscious homeowners, home builders, and home automation integrators are quick to embrace the latest in environmentally sustainable technology and are willing to make a significant investment in a service that offers long-term value to both their household and the planet. Smart energy storage, like the sonnenBatterie, allows homeowners to use clean and low-cost renewable energy, rather than tapping the grid during peak hours. This helps individuals and families to save on their monthly utility bills and potentially sell excess power back to the utility provider. It also provides homeowners with peace of mind by ensuring that their automated home stays online in the event of a power outage. Sonnen will collaborate with five-year CEDIA veteran RoseWater Energy, as well as OneFirefly to further integrate the clean technology category directly into the CEDIA channel.

Peerless-AV introduced its latest line of all-season outdoor TVs, the UltraView UHD Outdoor TV. The 4K resolution TVs are available in 49- (UV492), 55- (UV552), and 65-inch (UV652) models. Complementing its innovative TVs, Peerless-AV showcased the new Xtreme Outdoor Soundbar (SPK-080), offering a more powerful and durable outdoor audio solution with 200 watts of total system power and Bluetooth connectivity. Also showcased was the completely updated and enhanced PeerAir Wireless HD Multimedia System (HDS-WHDI100), which complete wireless coverage when running multimedia wires is not an option, such as areas obstructed by wall or flooring.

After last year’s focus on voice-controlled solutions, Lutron recommitted to the CEDIA channel with several new products, including HomeWorks QS Palladiom thermostat and HVAC controller, the new exposed-bracket Palladiom Shading System, new, easier-to-set-up RA2 Select lighting and shading control, and Lutron Connect packages with a family of DIN rail panels and modules. The Lutron Connect packages open the door to more project opportunities for its HomeWorks QS system integrators. These new products deliver increased flexibility that gives integrators the ability to complete a project of lighting controls and shades on a single QS wired link. The new Lutron Connect packages include a 1-link processor and the Lutron Connect Bridge. These packages reduce the starting price of a HomeWorks QS system and bring the Lutron Connect app with remote access and expanded cloud-based integration to every project. Additionally, HomeWorks QS integrators can now utilize the new DIN power panels and modules to provide flexible dimming and switching solutions on the QS link. DIN power modules (DPMs) are specifically designed for the best LED dimming performance available. The new 1-link processor is ideal for smaller projects, when only one link type is required (RF or QS). For multi-processor projects, the 1-link processor can be configured to any link type including QS Wired, RF, RPM Panel, or H48/Q96. DIN power modules support any lighting load type so integrators can adjust for last-minute changes to the lighting fixtures. The 1-link HomeWorks QS processor and the DIN solutions are supported in version 12.0 of the HomeWorks QS Designer Software. The DIN rail panels are for installation in smaller spaces and includes various DPMs: Phase Adaptive Dimmers, Switches, 0-10V Dimmers, and EcoSystem digital controllers as well as multiple enclosures of different sizes to hold the DPMs. These new panels provide more dimming zones per panel, minimizing the equipment footprint. Available this October, Sivoia QS configurable power panels will further maximize flexibility for wired shading products. The panels are available in 10- and 30-output versions and provide a prewire landing point during construction. When shades are installed, power supply modules with five outputs are easily snapped into place.

Featuring the very latest Pro Audio Technology (PRO) power and DSP technology, the DMA-1508B amplifier provides eight channels of clean power and balanced analog audio inputs with matching looping outputs–all in a one-rack unit (1U), fan-less chassis. Balanced inputs make the DMA-1508B much less susceptible to system-based ground noise than amps with single-ended operation only. Like all PRO amplifier products, the DMA-1508B utilizes PRO’s proprietary SoundTools DSP control software, which allows high-resolution digital signal processing for loudspeaker filtering and EQ, signal routing, user gain and delay adjustments, and up to eight user parametric EQ filters per channel.
