Sony Expands 4K HDR Home Theater Projector Line with Entry Level Model

Broadens Offerings for Advanced User and First-Timers Alike September 6, 2017
Why This Matters

All three projectors feature Triluminos display and Sony’s Reality creation feature, and are available this week from authorized Sony Dealers.

VPL-VW285ES 4K HDR Home Theater Projector

Today, Sony Electronics introduced its newest 4K HDR home theater projector models, including the entry-level VPL-VW285ES, delivering excellent picture quality for AV enthusiasts seeking to upgrade their cinema and gaming experience for less than $5,000. It delivers a picture up to 200 inches in true 4K HDR and more than four times the resolution of full HD.

The VPL-VW285ES supports 4K HDR signals at 60p with 10-bit depth for compatibility with gaming systems and high frame rate movies. The projector features Sony’s Triluminos display that provides a much broader color range while reproducing more tones and textures, and longer playing time than a standard projector with operation time of up to 6,000 hours for fewer interruptions and reduced maintenance costs.

Sony also announced the mid-level VPL-VW385ES 4K HDR home theater projector. With a Dynamic Contrast of 200,000:1, images are projected that are clear and crisp with deep, rich blacks and detailed highlights. The “Advanced Iris”, improves detail and reduces picture artifacts. Both models include Sony’s Reality Creation feature, which provides a crisper picture quality on 4K content and enhanced upscaling from HD content. Priced at just under $8,000, the VW385ES presents an option for users looking to upgrade their home theater experience.

“Sony’s newest line-up of true 4K HDR home theater projectors delivers the engagement experience for cinema-viewers and gamers of all genres,” said Mike Fasulo, Sony Electronics president and COO. “The new projector line provides an entry-level for those seeking to elevate their viewing experience to true 4K with the VW285ES or reach further into image perfection with the VW385ES home theater projector experience.”

Both the VPL-VW285ES and VPL-VW385ES projectors come in compact form factors for installation in smaller rooms feature whisper-quiet operation. The VPL-VW385ES includes Picture Position Memories, which store custom settings so that users can quickly watch movies in their ideal screen format. Customized lens focus, zoom and shift settings, as well as aspect ratio and blanking, can be stored for recall so that the viewing experience goes uninterrupted.

Sony also unveiled the VPL-VW885ES, a high-tier home theater projector armed with 2,000 lumens of brightness, “Infinite” dynamic contrast with real-time laser light level control, and 20,000 hours of lamp life. The VPL-VW885ES will be made available to Sony dealers this week for under $25,000.

Sony’s VPL-VW675ES, introduced at last year’s CEDIA Expo, remains in the model line but receives the following updates as a running change for new and existing customers: Adds the Hybrid Log Gamma format with auto-detection to the supported HDR formats; Provides additional detail about the color format and HDR format of incoming signals in the Information Menu; and Employs an improved lens for even better focus and stability than before. Note: These features are common to the three new projectors introduced at CEDIA 2017.

The Sony VPL-VW285ES and VPL-VW385ES is available for purchase at all authorized dealers nationwide.

In conjunction with the product announcement, Sony revealed that Kaleidescape, creator of the Strato 4K Ultra HD high-dynamic-range movie player, will partner with Sony to provide new promotional offers for consumers who purchase a Sony 4K HDR projector and Kaleidescape 4K player. Any consumer who purchases a qualifying Sony 4K HDR projector between now and March 31, 2018 will receive a bundle of ten 4K HDR movies, valued at up to $350.00, at no additional charge, from the Kaleidescape Movie Store. This offer is also available to current owners of a qualifying Sony projector who then purchase a Kaleidescape Strato system between now and March 31, 2018.

The VPL-VZ1000ES ultra-short throw 4K HDR home theater projector enables an image to be projected 100 inches when placing it only 6 inches away from a wall. Meanwhile, the UBP-X1000ES 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc player enhances playback on non-HDR TVs with HDR to SDR conversion, grants access to the latest 4K HDR streaming services, and supports playback of almost any disc or file format including Hi-Res Audio.

“Sony’s newest line-up of true 4K HDR home theater projectors delivers the engagement experience for cinema-viewers and gamers of all genres. “The new projector line provides an entry-level for those seeking to elevate their viewing experience to true 4K with the VW285ES or reach further into image perfection with the VW385ES home theater projector experience.” — Mike Fasulo, Sony Electronics president and COO
