Sony Introduces Bravia OLED Line, New UST Projector

At CES, Sony Electronics announced two new 4K HDR television series designed to deliver even wider brightness range and higher contrast.

At CES, Sony Electronics announced two new 4K HDR television series designed to deliver even wider brightness range and higher contrast. The new flagship XBR-A1E BRAVIA OLED and XBR-X930E/X940E series TVs make use of 4K HDR content with the combination of Sony’s unique image processor and display technologies.

Sony also launched the VPL-VZ1000ES ultra-short throw 4K HDR home theater projector that can be positioned as little as 6 inches away from the wall and produce a 100-inch image.

The XBR-A1E Bravia OLED combines the superior picture quality of OLED powered by Sony’s 4K HDR Processor X1 Extreme, the world’s first Acoustic Surface sound system, and a stand-less form factor.

“Sony continues to make consumer choice a priority especially for those seeking the very best viewing experience, and we are proud to introduce our new XBR-A1E BRAVIA OLED series,” said Mike Fasulo, president and COO of Sony Electronics. “Sony delivers incredible innovation and excitement to customers with all of our premium 4K HDR TVs through a powerful mix of technology and our exclusive image processing.”

A1E series uses the first of its kind audio technology to emit sound from the screen itself. Taking advantage of the OLED’s backlight-less structure, Sony developed a new Acoustic Surface sound technology, through which the entire screen resonates to produce sound. This allows for wide sound and image synchronization from all angles, even off to the sides. The Acoustic Surface technology lends to cutting-edge design of the A1E series by doing away with conventional speakers usually located around the TV. The result is a stand-less form factor with no distraction from the picture.

In addition, the X930E/X940E series features new LED backlight driving technology alongside the X1 Extreme processor, Slim Backlight Drive+. The Slim Backlight Drive+, an evolution of Slim Backlight Drive, is a further improved grid-array backlighting system in a slim form factor, which allows for even more precise local dimming control. With its quad-edge LED structure and X-tended Dynamic Range PRO local dimming and boosting technology, it brings greater brightness and exceptional contrast. The X940E features a full-array boosting and dimming backlight for precision contrast and incredible brightness.

Both the new XBR-X930E/X940E and XBR-A1E Bravia OLED series TV will support Dolby Vision, are powered by Android TV, and feature Google Home compatibility, for voice control and control via the Google Home device.

The VPL-VZ1000ES ultra short-throw projector is 40 percent smaller than the currently available Sony VPL-GTZ1 ultra-short throw projector, and features a Z-Phosphor laser light source to generate 2,500 lumens of color light output, 25 percent brighter than VPL-GTZ1. Sony’s SXRD panels, coupled with the laser light engine produce high dynamic contrast, enhancing the highlights and lowlights of HDR content.

“The VPL-VZ1000ES Ultra-Short Throw projector is a real game changer,” Fasulo said. “Everyone wants a larger screen, but not everyone can find the space for it. Sony enables the best of both worlds with this new generation of ultra short-throw projectors. Now, it’s possible to project a 4K HDR-quality 100-inch or even 120-inch display in your family room without the need for a dedicated media room.”

The form factor of the VPL-VZ1000ES allows for greater versatility in usage, allowing for large display sizes in small spaces, as well as locations with high ceilings.

“Sony’s new projector technology, combined with our anti-ambient screen materials that work especially with ultra short-throw projectors, allows consumers to have a huge screen in their living room with a simple, elegant installation,” said Blake Vackar, director of commercial sales at Screen Innovations. “This technology is unlike anything consumers have ever experienced in home cinema viewing. With the advent of 4K projector technology like Sony’s VPL-VZ1000ES we expect to see ultra short-throw projection, as a category of home projector sales, continue its rapid growth over the next five years.”

VPL-VZ1000ES Ultra Short-Throw 4K HDR Home Theater Projector will be available April 2017 for a suggested retail price of USD $24,999. It is available now for pre-order from authorized Sony retailers.
