Calling himself lucky to have a background in nearly all facets of consumer electronics, Michael Palm, started TechGuys 15 years ago after hearing a big box store salesperson give bad advice to a customer. With a focus on the custom integration of the latest technology when possible, TechGuys has been a KanexPro dealer for approximately one year.

How do you rate the HDBASE5PL?
An 8. These days, just about every product needs to connect to the Internet. Having options for RS232 and POE expand its options exponentially. Simply put, the HDBASE5PL works as specified with regard to distance and specified connections. When you add up the equivalent in traditional cables and labor it would take to install them, it just makes sense. I rate this product 8 out of 10 based on three main points: its function, time savings, and ROI.

For what types of installations is it best suited?
Long Runs, situations where products need an Ethernet, IR Eye, POE or RS232 and new home or renovation pre-wires. To elaborate on the last point, starting soon we’ll be using this device for all pre-wires as the primary terminal drop. Having several of these accessible allows you to easily plug in a monitor, connect (and power) an IP-Camera, control window coverings and control everything from a smart phone or tablet.

What is one feature of the HDBASE5PL that stands out in your projects?
Tough question…I’d say its flexibility. Its nice to know that one cable gets you five connection solutions. We also like how fast the “handshake” is between the receiver and flat screen.

What features would you like to see changed or added?
Having a second switchable HDMI input on the transmitter that’s controllable via IR. A built-in WiFi extender/access point would simply be amazing.
