NFL lineman Trystan Colon and his family rely on PowerShades throughout their Jopin, Mo., home.

Arizona Cardinals offensive lineman Trystan Colon and his wife, Mikayla Ramsey, needed a flexible shading solution for the Joplin, Mo., home they share with their kids, and they found it in PowerShades, which provided more than 30 battery-powered automated shades for the house — in many different sizes and all serving different purposes.

“The customizability of the shades is important to our family,” Ramsey says. “The shades in our house are all different sizes to fit a variety of custom windows. Plus, PowerShades offered the huge range of colors and fabrics that we wanted. We were excited to find an automated shades company that could perfectly fit our needs, as well as the many different window sizes and shapes.”

The Colon family has PowerShades automated shades in almost every room in their house: dual shades in the three kids’ rooms, master bedroom, and movie room; light-filtering shades in the primary living room, office, and kitchen; and blackout shades in the basement game room. All told, there are 14 blackout shades and 17 light-filtering shades in the Colon home.

“My wife and I love the convenience of the shades and the ease of working with the PowerShades team,” says Colon. “Right from the get-go, everything went smoothly and was stress-free. Even with all the custom sizes and different configurations, the install was really easy.

Shades Week: Why Diversity Matters in Your Shade Portfolio

“My wife and I were both really pleased with the communication we experienced from the PowerShades sales and manufacturing teams. There was little to no back and forth on issues or regarding clarifications on design and sizing. The biggest headache about any home improvement is feeling like you’re holding a supplier’s or contractor’s hand the whole way. With PowerShades, we picked out the colors and filter, and they took care of the rest with no surprises.”

“Of course, the shades themselves couldn’t be more convenient,” Ramsey adds. The simple push of a button allows the light in or blocks it out. It has come to a point where even my dogs know it’s nap time when the blackout shades go down for the day.”

Light-blocking and light-filtering automated shades from PowerShades can put lighting, temperature, and privacy control at the homeowner’s fingertips, especially if the shades can be controlled through voice control or using an app via a mobile phone or tablet. Currently the Colons primarily control the shades through a touch pad on the wall, but they plan to start using the app soon.

Automated shades like those in the Colon home can go a long way toward making the lighting and temperature in a home more comfortable. Homeowners can control automated shades to take advantage of the warmth of the sun during colder days and keep rooms cool by lowering the shades during the heat of summer. If desired, shades like the PowerShades battery-powered automated shades can be pre-programmed to open and close at set times (which can change according to the season).

Shades Week: Succeeding With Shades

Safety First

Of course, both Colon and Ramsey are devoted to their family, and keeping that family safe. One small way they did just that was by replacing their existing shades with automated PowerShades.

“When we first moved into this house, the existing shades were typical string-lined blinds. Before we even finalized buying the house, we knew these those old-style shades would have to go,” says Ramsey. “With no dangling cords, PowerShades automated shades are safe for both our children and our dogs.

“Our kids may not fully appreciate the safety advantages of the PowerShades,” she continues, “but they certainly love the cool factor of being able to automatically open and close multiple shades at the same time. Our movie room, which doubles as a playroom, features window coverage around the TV to eliminate glare and direct light while watching a movie, plus blackout shades when we want the room dark. But the room also has French doors that can let light into the playroom area. One button is pressed and, as my kids would say, ‘The playroom is open!'”

Shades Week: The Future of Sustainable Residential Systems

The Colons recently purchased a second home near the Cardinals stadium in Arizona. That home is filled with PowerShades blackout curtains, which play an important role in keeping the light out and the cool air in — especially in a state where temperatures soar on a regular basis.

And with such a good experience indoors with automated shades, they plan to add outdoor shades to their yard this winter.
