CEA, MECP Release Installation Technician Study Guide

Designed as a comprehensive study resource for the highest level of certification available for a mobile electronics technician, the expanded guide covers the material necessary to achieve Master Installation Technician status.

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) has released the Master Installation Technician Study Guide, Second Edition under its Mobile Electronics Certified Professionals (MECP) program. Designed as a comprehensive study resource for the highest level of certification available for a mobile electronics technician, the expanded guide covers the material necessary to achieve Master Installation Technician status.

“The MECP program continues to raise the bar on educating and certifying the base of qualified installation professionals in our industry,” said Ron Freeman, CEO of AAMP of America and chair of the automotive division at CEA. “The new MECP Master Guide offers an impressive tool for advanced knowledge and highlights techniques and troubleshooting tips for installation of the latest technology in the automobile. The guide ultimately prepares a candidate for master level certification, an elite and growing sector of the MECP program, the ‘top guns’ of our industry. Thank you to the team of contributors for your endless hours in producing the 2015 Master Installation Technician Study Guide, a must have for every retailer.”

The MECP Master Installation Technician Study Guide covers advanced electronics theory and application along with a number of exciting new updates. The expanded guide now includes new comprehensive sections on topics including:

•Electric vehicle recommended installation practices
•Troubleshooting remote starters and data interfaces
•Application-specific oscilloscope measurements

•Driver safety systems (i.e., lane departure, forward collision and blind spot warnings)

Additionally, the guide includes an in-depth section on vehicle networks including Media Oriented Systems Transport (MOST), 50 over copper, deep enhancements in mobile audio systems design and tuning content, and an expanded glossary with updated recommended reading resources. Becoming an MECP master installation technician exhibits dedication to professional development through education and skill building on the part of the recipient. Since MECP’s creation in 1991, thousands of installation technicians have been certified through the program with many going on to acquire MECP advanced and master level certifications and assisting in the training of new technicians.

“The MECP program as opened countless opportunities for me,” said MECP Master Installation Technician Shawn Curlee. “The best part about being an MECP master, besides wearing a recognized gold patch, is that it made me realize there are no limits to what you can do once you apply yourself. The fundamentals that MECP instills on its technicians are what drove me to better myself and help other technicians, while delivering the best customer experience possible. Honestly, I am not sure where I would be right now if I would have responded differently when my first installation manager asked me: ’So do you want to get MECP certified?’”

“Achieving the MECP Master Certification has been my goal since becoming involved with the MECP program in 2005,” said MECP Master Installation Technician Aron Roberts. “MECP Master Certification has inspired me to become more involved in the industry. In return, I have had the opportunity to support and train new and aspiring installation technicians. I take pride in letting customers know I am a MECP master technician. I feel it makes them more confident in the services I provide.”

Technicians, retailers, and industry educators can order the new MECP Master Installation Technician Study Guide for $75.00 online at the CEA store or by calling (866) 858-1555. The updated master exam will be available mid-February 2015. Until then, the current MECP master exam will apply to the previous (first edition) MECP Master Installation Technician Study Guide, originally published in 2007. This allows technicians preparing to take the master level exam enough time to accommodate testing prior to the mid-February transition.
