Shelly Palmer After a brief introduction by Lutron’s president Mike Pessina, Shelly Palmer, president and CEO of Palmer Advanced Media, strategic advisor to leading technology firms, and regular commentator for CNBC, CNN, and Fox Business News, delivered CEDIA’s opening keynote on Wednesday afternoon. In his address, Palmer touched on major themes of the future of technology, such as the ever increasing velocity of data and its subsequent collection, along with machine learning, while pinpointing the vast opportunities for CEDIA professionals as trends like IoT multiply the number of connected devices in homes. “Today you are experience the slowest rate of technological change you ever will in your life,” he said.
With a dry wit, Palmer shared his analysis of the technological future, from the near term—panning the iPhone 7, the chief improvement of which being water resistance to help it survive falling into the toilet—to the long term, highlighting the potential for people to architect the barrier between man and machine partnerships.
