Los Angeles, CA–Gemstar-TV Guide International and Sony Corporation have signed a multi-year licensing agreement allowing Sony to incorporate Gemstar-TV Guide’s interactive program guide (IPG) for the consumer electronics arena into certain Sony digital products in Japan. Under the agreement, the licensed products include digital recording devices and televisions.

Gemstar-TV Guide’s IPG for consumer electronics is marketed as G-Guide in Japan. Sony has previously incorporated G-Guide into several products in Japan, including the world’s first Blu-ray Disc recorder, Sony’s BDZ-S77. Under the new agreement with Gemstar-TV Guide, Sony plans to expand its incorporation of G-Guide into PSX, a new-generation HDD+DVD recorder.

“Sony is known for its commitment to quality and innovation, and we are very pleased to be working with them on their latest consumer electronics products. Our agreement is further affirmation of the value of Gemstar-TV Guide’s IPG product, brand and intellectual property,” said Gemstar-TV Guide’s CEO, Jeff Shell.

Gemstar-TV Guide adds Sony to a growing list of licensees for its consumer electronics guide, including Matsushita (Panasonic), Philips, Thomson (makers of the RCA, GE and Scenium brands), Sharp, Samsung, Zenith, JVC and Mitsubishi.
