iDevices, the seven-year-old smart-home company and creator of the iGrill, has been acquired by Hubbell, a $3.4 billion global manufacturer of electrical, lighting and utility products for the residential, commercial and industrial markets.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Founded by CEO Christopher Allen, iDevices first garnered attention with iGrill, a Bluetooth-enabled food thermometer that served as the company’s launch vehicle.
It later sold its smart-thermometer business to Weber-Stephens Products, makers of Weber grills, in order to focus on a broader line of connected-home products, including smart electrical outlets, thermostats, and light-bulb sockets.
Hubbell said iDevices’ experience in developing and designing smart-home solutions, combined with its own global manufacturing and distribution prowess, “will lay the perfect groundwork for a partnership in IoT at a significant scale.”
iDevices said its products and Connected app will continue to operate as normal with regular feature and integration updates, and that the company, led by Allen in the new role of president, will continue to serve installers and builders with sophisticated, game-changing products that enhance everyday life.
Hubbell was founded nearly 130 years ago by American industrialist Harvey Hubbell, inventor of the electrical wall plug and the pull-chain lamp socket. Both companies are based in Connecticut.
