Russound Licenses iPort Technology

Sonance parent, Dana Innovations, provides technology for next-gen selection of iPod-compatible multiroom models.

Newmarket, NH — Russound will soon introduce a new selection of products designed to integrate iPod portable media players with whole-house audio-video systems, thanks to an agreement with Dana Innovations, corporate parent of Sonance and iPort music systems.

Under the terms of the agreement, Russound is the first company to license Dana Innovations patented iPort concept and integrating technologies, encompassing docking structures that are able to accept the full range of Apple iPod models and other handheld audio players. The underlying technologies covered by this new license deliver full control including audio playback and file-selection, throughout a multiroom audio system.

In the past year alone, Russound has enjoyed a great deal of success with the iBridge Dock, which makes it easy to integrate an iPod with any multiroom AV system, said Charlie Porritt, Russounds vice president of sales. More than just a sign of a great product, we view this as an important trend that will continue to gain momentum as more consumers use their iPods as music servers rather than simple portable players.

As a company that is committed to serving our dealers with a wide selection of the most in-demand products and features, we plan to incorporate Dana Innovations patented technology into a line of Russound branded products that provide maximum flexibility and enjoyment for consumers who treat their iPods as a primary source of entertainment in the home, Porritt added.

Were excited to have Russound as our first licensee of iPort patented technology, said Shawn Sugarman, CEO of Dana Innovations. Russound is ideally positioned to utilize our proprietary, patented innovations because of their strength in multi-room audio product systems.

iPorts unique underlying technology incorporates hardware and firmware that enable personal computers to integrate iPod control and audio-file transfer via the in-wall dock, integrating and synchronizing the audio system with a media library on a Mac or PC. iPort technology is suitable for a wide range of audio and audio-video system concepts, including highly customizable multiroom and whole-house layouts, multiroom AV receivers, and single-room/zone connections.
