Another Week, Another CEDIA Departure

I joked the other day to an industry friend that I should take a “screen grab” of the CEDIA website staff page. That way I could check it periodically to see if any more team members had left on their own or been shown the door. I was kidding, but now I think it might be a good idea.

I joked the other day to an industry friend that I should take a “screen grab” of the CEDIA website staff page. That way I could check it periodically to see if any more team members had left on their own or been shown the door. I was kidding, but now I think it might be a good idea.

The latest news, broken on Ted Green’s Strata-gee.com blog, is that VP of business development Ron Fleming has left the association, where he has served as one of the key members of the team responsible for selling events and cultivating sponsorships with vendors.

As Green surmises in his post, this could simply be a case of awkward timing, considering that Fleming’s role like will become redundant next year as Emerald Expositions takes over full management of the annual trade show after purchasing the property earlier in the year. The clunky timing follows the recent and very mysterious departure of CEO Vin Bruno after only two years at the helm, and Bruno’s cutting of 15 percent of the CEDIA staff shortly before that.

Perhaps Fleming got a new job a little earlier than expected and knew he’d better get while the getting was good. Or, maybe it was something more dubious. Similar to when Bruno departed without warning, the public is left to make up wild theories to help it make sense.

CEDIA might have valid reasons for all of its moves, but by not sharing them with the public, we're left to speculate.
