Tech Showcase – The Latest Subwoofers

The lowdown on the latest products we rely on to go down low.

For custom integrators, the subwoofer has evolved from an “obtrusive black box” into a sophisticated architectural element that also can move massive amounts of air from increasingly smaller or entirely hidden footprints. This roundup explores the latest subwoofers that bridge the gap between audiophile-grade performance and the requirements of luxury design.

SVS 3000 Micro R|Evolution

SVS 3000 Micro R|Evolution

The SVS 3000 Micro R|Evolution marries exclusive driver design, the SVS R|Evolution amplifier platform, and DSP power to deliver performance that outclasses larger models. The beating heart of the 3000 Micro R|Evolution is a pair of active, side-firing 9-inch high-excursion drivers custom-built by the SVS design team to maximize output from a small enclosure. The drivers operate in unison, acoustically and electrically in parallel, to generate controlled low frequencies. By firing in opposite directions, mechanical forces are canceled, creating a sonically inert cabinet and eliminating unwanted vibration, one of the biggest limitations of compact subwoofers. Each high-excursion active 9-inch driver employs a progressive inverted surround to ensure maximum linear displacement.

Revel B140

Revel B140

The Revel Performa4 Series B140 powered subwoofer is the ideal companion to any Performa4 system, featuring a 10-inch (250mm) fiber-composite cone woofer driven by a 750-watt RMS/1500-watt peak Class D amplifier for deep bass to 26 Hz. Rear-mounted controls include a variable low-pass filter (50–150 Hz), LFE input, phase control, volume, and auto on/off. Revel’s patented Constant Pressure Gradient rear port eliminates turbulence for pristine, distortion-free bass.

HYPERSUB F-24 DUO

HYPERSUB expands the Frontier line with the F-24 DUO, a force-canceling, dual-opposed 24-inch infinite-baffle subwoofer module engineered to deliver cinema-scale infrasonic low frequencies, while disappearing into risers, baffle walls, or other structural cavities. Hand-built in Canada and powered by the dedicated HYPERSUB 224D/C rack amplifier (2 × 2400 watts RMS with installer-tunable DSP), the F-24 DUO extends system capability for large and very large rooms and integrates with HYPERSUB F-15 and F-21 arrays for reference-grade, RP-22-aligned performance. The F-24 DUO’s dual 24-inch, long-throw neodymium drivers operate in a force-canceling manifold that minimizes cabinet reaction forces while maximizing acoustic output. The module is optimized for infinite-baffle installs and is sized for discreet architectural integration. The manifold fits a standard 20-inch × 30-inch HVAC grille for stealthy placement behind fabric walls or within seating risers.

KEF KC92

KEF KC92

The KEF KC92 Subwoofer features the company’s proprietary digital signal processing algorithm, the Music Integrity Engine (MIE). The KC92 also features two 9-inch drivers, derived from KEF’s flagship Blade HiFi Speaker, and has a five-preset Room Placement Equalization function that ensures consistent performance no matter where the subwoofer is placed. The two drivers in the KC92 are positioned back-to-back in a force-cancelling configuration. This design neutralizes out reactive forces, minimizing cabinet vibration and maximizing accuracy and detail. This configuration enables an immense volume capacity, facilitating sound pressure levels of 110 dB from a compact, sealed cabinet.

The Power Lux lineup includes four models: the PL-10S and PL-12S compact sealed subwoofers, as well as the PL-10P and PL-12P ported subwoofers. These models are designed to achieve deep, impactful bass as low as 17 Hz, and plays as loud as 123 dB. Each subwoofer features a 10- or 12-inch long-throw mica-graphite poly cone with NBR Surround and is powered by an integrated 900-watt peak amplifier.

PS Audio Foundry F12

PS Audio Foundry F12

PS Audio’s first-ever subwoofer — the Foundry F12 — is a ground-up design featuring a high-excursion 12-inch woofer, 1000 watts of built-in amplification, and advanced room mode correction technology that works in conjunction with PS Audio’s new Foundry control app. The PS Audio Foundry F12’s driver is a completely new design. It has a long throw — greater than 2-1/2 inches — with a large 10-inch graduated Nomex spider. The motor structure utilizes large magnets, dual shorting rings, and other elements to maintain a constant magnetic field throughout the driver’s excursion. The driver employs a paper cone with a carbon fiber dust cap, for high stiffness, low mass, and internal damping.

Grimani Systems Epsilon-S Slimline

Grimani Systems Epsilon-S Slimline

The Grimani Systems Epsilon-S Slimline Subwoofer with an external DSP amplifier is designed for projects where aesthetics matter as much as performance. The Epsilon-S delivers the same reference-quality sound as the company’s other models, now in a sleek in-wall format. The Epsilon-S provides deep, “punchy” bass and the detail expected from Grimani Systems. Designed for luxury cinemas and media spaces, it blends invisibly into the architecture while delivering thunderous excitement.
