Monitor Audio’s Silver RX Range

Monitor Audio’s new mid-market speaker range, the Silver RX, is offered in a choice of real-wood veneers and high-gloss piano finishes in an all-around cabinet wrap, while RX performance relies on Monitor Audio engineering for its sound quality.

Techniques and materials refined for the company’s flagship Platinum and Gold Signature series speakers are deployed throughout each of the seven RX designs.

New RX Drivers
According to the manufacturer, by refining its FEA (Finite Elemental Analysis), engineers were able to shape its core driver material, C-CAM (Ceramic-Coated Aluminum Magnesium), to produce better audio fidelity. They also improved the tweeter design for Silver RX, bringing higher sensitivity and a wider bandwidth (up to 35KHz) for greater high frequency resolution. Advanced FEA simulations helped the company fine-tuned the RST (Rigid Surface Technology) C•CAM mid-range/bass drivers, originally created for Monitor’s Gold Signature speakers and now incorporated by the Silver RX range. Their ultra-rigid dimpled profiles are now more resistant to break-up under high drive conditions, producing wider frequency responses.

HiVe II (High Velocity) Reflex Port
Developed for the flagship Gold Signature range, the HiVe II reflex port is shaped to have the same effect on airflow as a gun-barrel on a bullet. Rifled grooves inside the port help to accelerate the flow and reduce turbulence, so air moves in and out of the port more efficiently, for a faster, cleaner more dynamic bass response.

Bolt-through Driver Design
Single bolt-through driver fixings have the dual effect of improving cabinet rigidity while further reducing vibration at the driver/cabinet interface, according to the company. Drivers are mounted on a single tensioned through-bolt, which is secured to the back of the cabinet. The bolt not only acts as a rigid cabinet brace to reduce box coloration, it also removes the need for conventional driver fixing. The driver and front baffle are effectively de-coupled to eliminate another source of unwanted resonance. The result is a more fluid communication of mid-range frequencies. With the absence of driver fixings at the front baffle and RX’s magnetically attached grille, a cleaner more refined overall appearance is achieved.

Cabinet design and finishes
Cabinets are constructed from 19mm (0.75-inch) MDF throughout (25mm/one-inch for RXW12). In addition to bolt-through driver bracing, additional radial and cross-bracing is employed for higher cabinet rigidity and lower cabinet coloration. All RX speakers are available in a choice of selected premium-quality “all-around” wood veneers or high gloss piano lacquer finishes.

Silver RX 1
The diminutive RX 1 two-way is configured to offer an impressively natural, rhythmic sound in a beautifully compact and practical form. The C-CAM tweeter design features a damped rear chamber, while the new six-inch bass driver with C-CAM RST cone technology provides better damping and improved midrange clarity.

Silver RX 2
The larger RX 2 is designed as an audiophile two-way speaker. Efficiency and bandwidth of a much larger speaker are achieved in a more compact size. The C-Cam tweeter design features a damped rear chamber, while an eight-inch bass driver with C-CAM RST cone technology provides better damping and improved midrange clarity.

Silver RX 6
The floor-standing RX 6 places the new wider bandwidth RX tweeter in concert with the freshly designed six-inch C-CAM bass and six-inch C-CAM bass/mid drivers. This balanced 2.5-way system incorporates a dual-chamber bass reflex design with differential tuning and twin HiVe ports. An adjustable bass plinth is supplied for added stability.

Silver RX 8
A true three-way speaker, the floor-standing RX8’s ultra-slim front profile conceals a deeper cabinet. Twin six-inch bass drivers are configured in a dual bass reflex twin HiVe port system. A single six-inch bass/mid driver delivers midrange sound, while the newly developed C-CAM gold dome tweeter extends performance to a point beyond the upper limit of the audible spectrum.

Silver RX Center
The RX Center’s 2.5-way design has been calibrated to match the dynamics and timbre of the other RX speakers for a seamless front sound stage in any RX system. Within the RX Center’s sealed enclosure, six-inch C-CAM bass/mid–range drivers sit astride the C-CAM gold dome tweeter.

Silver RX-FX
The wall-hanging RX-FX surround speaker can be flush-mounted on side or rear walls while providing timbre-matched surround effects. Dipole or bipole mode is selected at the flick of a switch. Dual C-CAM tweeters are side-firing while a single six-inch C-CAM bass/mid-range driver is center-mounted.

Silver RXW-12
The compact (25mm/one-inch MDF) RXW-12 active subwoofer uses a new 500-watt (RMS) Class D amplifier to control a newly designed front-firing 12-inch C-CAM driver. The RXW-12’s sealed enclosure includes a tri-suspended woofer with a three-inch voice coil and a double stack motor system. A 12-volt trigger provides switching control from AV amp or processor.
