ASCENDO Immersive Audio has introduced THE MULE 10 Kick Woofer. This purpose-built, high-output kick-bass module delivers tight, high-SPL impact while minimizing excitation of the lowest room modes. Applications include kick-bass extension for speakers intentionally rolled off below ~80 Hz; near-field bass with low-frequency sources close to the listening position; additional low-frequency sources for systems using Dirac Live ART; and home cinema and high-performance stereo installations.
THE MULE 10 is purpose-designed as a kick woofer, not a traditional subwoofer. It’s engineered to deliver the tight, directional impact many listeners perceive in the upper-bass/kick region, while staying clear of the very lowest frequencies that tend to excite the most stubborn room resonances. The result is bass that’s cleaner, faster, and more controllable in real-world rooms.
“Some of the most convincing bass isn’t necessarily the lowest bass, but the fast, physical hit that makes drums, dynamics, and transients feel real,” says Geoffrey Heinzel, ASCENDO co-managing partner. “In addition to the essential deep bass from ASCENDO infrasubs and traditional subwoofers, our customers wanted a dedicated ‘kick’ solution that adds punch and presence without exciting the lowest room modes. That’s exactly why we built THE MULE 10 Kick Woofer.”
Home cinema designers can pair THE MULE 10 with monitors to extend low-frequency response, or combine it with an infrasonic sub for full-range coverage. It can be deployed as an active or passive crossed-over kick woofer, and is the ideal extension for speaker systems intentionally rolled off around 80 Hz when extra energy and authority below that region is desired. This includes ASCENDO’s THE5, THE6, THE10, and THE12 loudspeaker models.
Another reason THE MULE 10 resonates with customers is the growing interest in near-field bass, placing low-frequency sources close to the listening position for a more physical, tactile experience. Thanks to its speed, control, and intentional avoidance of the very lowest room modes, it delivers highly tactile near-field impact that feels immediate and powerful, without bloating or thickening the overall bass balance.
It also aligns perfectly with modern active room technologies. Systems using Dirac Live ART (Active Room Treatment) can benefit from additional low-frequency sources when they can support those bands.
At the heart of THE MULE 10 is an overbuilt 10-inch platform: an ultra-light, stiff carbon-composite cone driven by a 4.5-inch voice coil. That motor structure is designed for serious headroom, rated to handle 2500 watts with 5 kW peak power capability, housed in a solid cast frame built for stability under extreme dynamics. The enclosure features thick solid aluminum front and back plates, internal bracing, and a magnetic black stretch-fabric grille for a seamless finish.
Despite its rock-solid construction, ASCENDO packed all that performance into an enclosure under 4 inches (102 mm) deep. As an added benefit to home technology integrators, THE MULE 10 is also sized to fit between standard 16-inch (406 mm) studs, making it ideal for discreet architectural integration. Adjustable mounting brackets can be placed on the top or sides and rotated for different orientations, so THE MULE 10 installs cleanly in walls and ceilings. For even faster installs, it also includes keyhole wall hangers for on-wall applications.
