Honeywell has released a new Android-compatible app that enables its Total Connect customers to view streaming video of their homes and businesses on their smartphones as well as control their security systems from any location.

In addition to Android, Honeywell provides Total Connect apps for the iPhone and BlackBerry. The new Android app is available for free download at Android Market.

“Smartphones are the new norm for staying connected to just about everything – friends, family, work, and everything else in between,” said Gordon Hope, general manager of Honeywell’s AlarmNet business. “Security is an essential part of our lives, so it only makes sense to use these increasingly popular devices to stay connected to our security systems as well.”

When using Total Connect apps, users can toggle between two modes: keypad functions and video viewing. In video viewing, users view live video, record and store video clips, take snapshots and can have custom video clips or pictures e-mailed to them when an event happens, such as when a child returns home from school. The Total Connect for Android app allows consumers to view up to six different cameras from their phones individually.

In the system mode, the app replicates a physical keypad and allows the user to arm and disarm their system, bypass zones and control lights and garage doors. When combined with anti-theft and environmental sensors, end users can receive alerts if valuable objects are moved, and if floods or extreme temperature changes have been detected.
