NAD Launches CI 980, CI 940 Multi-Channel Amps

NAD Electronics has added two new multi-channel amplifiers primarily designed for distributed audio systems for the custom installation market.

NAD Electronics has added two new multi-channel amplifiers primarily designed for distributed audio systems for the custom installation market. The eight-channel CI 980 ($1299) utilizes the latest high efficiency switching amplifier technology resulting in lighter weight, cooler operation, energy savings and improved reliability. The four-channel CI 940 ($799) uses NAD’s proven Class AB amplifier design featuring high dynamic power and low impedance drive capability. Both models are in stock and available for immediate delivery.

CI 980 features eight channels conservatively rated at 50 watts per channel with all channels driven into eight ohms. The multi-channel amp is stable at lower impedances and with long wire runs. Designed to drive four stereo zones, any two channels can be bridged to form one larger channel of 120 watts into eight ohms. This provides the installer important flexibility in tailoring the CI 980 for a variety of applications.

The CI 940 delivers 35 watts into four channels at 8 Ohms and is the best choice where the highest possible sound quality is desired. Like its larger sibling, two channels can be bridged to form one higher-powered channel delivering two channels of 100 watts each into 8 Ohms. The CI 940 can easily provide the instantaneous peak current required for controlled bass response by utilizing multiple discrete high power output devices. The power supply features very low impedance for lowest noise and good damping factor.

“With the custom installation market making a strong comeback, we felt there was an opportunity for fresh new thinking in high performance, multi-channel amplifiers,” explained Greg Stidsen director of technology and product planning for NAD Electronics. “NAD has deep roots in the custom market and our new CI amps offer excellent reliability, light weight, energy saving and of course great sound. We believe these new amplifiers represent a higher level of performance and value to the quality-oriented CI installer and their clients.”

Reliability is paramount for amplifiers utilized for professional installation. Both NAD CI 980 and CI 940 are designed for extreme reliability by being stable into demanding loads and fully protected from short circuits. Thermostatically controlled forced air-cooling prevents overheating and helps provide along-trouble-free life. Cooler operation also allows for using multiple amps in the same location without fear if heat buildup.

Phoenix speaker connection blocks and detachable power cords make installation a snap, and a selectable local or global input further simplifies wiring. Each input has a line input, line output and gain control for presetting maximum zone levels.

Their surprising light weight (CI 980 weighs under 13 lbs.) makes these powerhouse amps easy to handle and install. For further ease of installation, their solid metal chassis comes supplied with 2U ears for rack mounting, if so desired. Easy integration is assured by the choice of DC trigger or signal-sensing auto-on with auto shut-off and half-watt standby.

The light weight and efficient design of the amplifiers also yields an additional benefit in reduced energy usage, something the client will readily appreciate.
