In our series of #CEDIAShares blogs, we’re talking with exhibitors about the hottest technologies and trends they’re looking to see at CEDIA Expo 2022.

Q&A with Mitchell Klein, executive director of the Z-Wave Alliance and director, alliances strategy, Silicon Lab.

Why CEDIA Expo 2022?

We’re excited to return to the show this year to meet face-to-face with the professional installers that continue to advance the connected home space and push the boundaries of what’s possible from an integrated system. While findings from the latest Z-Wave State of the Ecosystem report that DIY is becoming a dominant means of installation among consumers, that is not bad news for integrators. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Not only does this drive awareness; but at some point, consumers want to add more capabilities than they can handle both timewise and via the learning curve. At this critical junction, professional installers can serve as IT experts to help customers achieve the smart home system they want. This combination of factors serves as the best case scenario for installers, as it means there are opportunities just waiting to be seized. The Z-Wave Alliance looks forward to these conversations at the show as we meet with professional installers within the Z-Wave Pavilion that will be comprised of industry-leading smart home and IoT member companies eager to showcase the latest certified Z-Wave products, devices, and solutions across the interoperable ecosystem, now 4000+ certified product strong.

What is the most exciting trend you expect to see at the show?

It has been exciting to see how the smart home continues to evolve and expand and how Z-Wave members are leading the charge in several categories like smart locks, HVAC controls, wireless power solutions, control hubs, and so much more. It’s hard to narrow in on one trend, but in looking across industry data, including our own Ecosystem report, lighting continues to be a category for growth for professionals and a category that homeowners show consistent interest in. With the rise in popularity of smart home technology, smart lighting is a natural starting point for many consumers. Professional integrators savvy to the trend are seeing customers that start with smart lighting come back to add-on additional solutions once they’re hooked on the convenience smart home tech offers.

What will you focus on at the show?

Apart from showcasing the dynamic product range of Z-Wave members, we are thrilled to be reviving our all-star panel session The Platform Playground Revisited: Where Smart Home Protocols Stand in 2022, How Far We’ve Come, What’s Still To Be Done. This session really is a can’t-miss event as we have representatives from across the smart home industry (Google, The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), Silicon Labs, ASSA ABLOY, Building36Technologies, and Z-Wave) joined together to discuss the technologies, standards, and initiatives that will shape the current and future connected home landscape. I would encourage all attendees to register for this session, it will take place on Friday, September 30, 2022, from 11:30 AM CT – 1:00 PM CT, live and in-person in Room D 174. Moderated by Jennifer Pattison Tuohy, the smart home editor for The Verge.
