A recent report from Baltimore Gas & Electric has shown that shade automation can yield substantial energy savings. On average, customers saved 13.5% on electricity and 3.4% on gas over the installation period, demonstrating the power of automation to reduce residential energy consumption and costs measurably.

“Now that a broad portfolio of Hunter Douglas PowerView Automation shades has earned the AERC Energy Improvement label, homeowners can confidently choose custom shades that complement their spaces, make their homes more comfortable, and reduce their energy consumption,” says Stephanie Harvey, product director, Honeycomb and energy efficiency programs at Hunter Douglas. “While automated shading provides numerous benefits like convenience, energy efficiency is increasingly among the highest demands from homeowners.”

“Automation provides a smart solution to increase energy performance and comfort, which can be easily integrated with many of today’s in-home technology systems,” says Ralph Vasami, executive director, AERC. “With AERC’s automation rating, the product’s performance is clearly communicated, providing consumers with the information needed to make informed decisions about their window attachments needs.”

Newly certified products with PowerView Automation can be identified by the AERC Energy Improvement label, which highlights its energy-savings potential. To illustrate the energy performance of automated products, the label now indicates the improved energy rating with automation as well as the standard energy rating number. This shows what the product’s energy rating is if used with automation, providing consumers with the data on a product’s performance best suited for their environment.

Two prominent numbers on a certified product’s label easily determine its energy performance: the Cool Climate and Warm Climate ratings. The “Cool Climate” rating indicates the energy savings potential when using a particular product in a cooler climate, where homeowners may be required to turn up the heat in order to keep their home more comfortable. The “Warm Climate” rating indicates the potential energy savings when using in warmer climates, where homeowners may be required to turn up the air conditioning to make their homes more comfortable. The closer these ratings are to the “Max” rating listed in the corresponding section of the label, the more energy the product can save.
