A Cinema After Dark

In 3-D Squared’s private horror-inspired theater, an 11.4.6 JBL Synthesis Dolby Atmos system makes every whisper and jump scare land.

Great horror films are rarely about what you see. They live in the dark corners of the frame, in the floorboard that creaks somewhere behind you, and in the low rumble that tightens your chest a beat before the scare arrives. For one horror-loving homeowner, 3-D Squared set out to build a private cinema that delivers all of it, with sound leading the way.

Designed around artwork from The Conjuring and Annabelle film franchises, the theater pairs a moody, cinematic interior with an immersive Dolby Atmos system built entirely on JBL Synthesis loudspeakers, subwoofers, processing, and amplification. The architecture sets the mood. JBL Synthesis delivers the chills.

The Challenge

Horror soundtracks are some of the most demanding content a home theater can play. A single scene can move from near silence to full impact in an instant, and suspense often depends on subtle cues like a whisper off to one side, footsteps overhead, or a door closing behind the audience. To make those moments land, the system needed to deliver:

  • Precise placement of effects around and above every seat
  • Dialog that stays anchored to the screen, even at a whisper
  • Deep, controlled bass that adds weight without masking detail
  • Clean dynamics from the quietest passages to the loudest jolts
  • Technology that disappears into the dark

The Solution

3-D Squared specified JBL Synthesis SCL loudspeakers and SSW subwoofers throughout the room, configured for Dolby Atmos playback.

“JBL Synthesis is pivotal to all our high-end AV systems,” says Abe Rasoulian, senior project manager for 3-D Squared. “The build quality, the amazing sound, and most importantly, the expertise and assistance we receive from our JBL support team is absolutely amazing. The whole JBL Synthesis team has always been there for us. In return, we have been loyal to the brand.”

Three SCL-2 loudspeakers form the front soundstage, anchoring dialog to the screen while music and effects spread edge to edge across the 150-inch display. Eight SCL-7 loudspeakers wrap the side and rear walls, carrying the ambience, movement, and off-screen cues that keep a horror audience on edge. Six in-ceiling SCL-8 loudspeakers extend the sound field above the seats, so when a soundtrack sends something skittering across the ceiling, the audience hears it there.

Keeping all of that hardware out of sight was just as important as the sound it produces. “With most of our designs requiring speakers to be hidden or mounted in the walls and ceilings, JBL Synthesis offers a variety of speaker configurations that can accommodate exactly what we need,” Rasoulian says.

Bass You Feel Before You See It

Four JBL Synthesis subwoofers handle the low end from both ends of the room. Two SSW-2 dual 12-inch subwoofers sit on the floor beneath the screen, while two SSW-4 subwoofers are built into the rear wall. Splitting them this way gives the calibration process more control over room modes and how bass integrates across the seating area. In a horror film, that foundation does double duty, giving weight to the big scares and adding an unsettling physical presence to the score long before anything appears on screen.

At the center of the system is the JBL Synthesis SDP-75 immersive processor, configured with 24 channels for Dolby Atmos. It manages the routing and spatial rendering of every soundtrack across the room’s 17 loudspeakers and four subwoofers. Three JBL Synthesis SMA-8300 8-channel amplifiers provide dedicated power for the full loudspeaker array.

Daniel Jones of JBL Synthesis performed the factory calibration using Trinnov Optimizer. The process analyzes how each loudspeaker behaves in the room and addresses frequency response, timing, and phase, helping dialog, effects, overhead information, and bass work together as one coherent sound field. Working hand in hand with the room’s acoustic treatments, calibration turns a collection of premium components into a finished theater.

“On each of our installs, we gladly have JBL Synthesis techs come out to our jobsite to bring out every ounce of performance from the JBL Synthesis system,” Rasoulian says.

For Glen Hoffman, president of 3-D Squared, that kind of teamwork is where every great theater begins. “Everything starts with clear, concise and timely communication,” he says. “Everyone needs to understand their role in the project and the time frame required to craft a standout, immersive theater.”

A Room Designed to Haunt

Hoffman’s design process starts with the story a client wants to tell. “If a client has a specific request for a design or theme, I’ll research different design elements related to that theme and come up with unique design elements that help support that theme,” he says.

The interior supports the experience without stealing the show. A restrained palette of black and dark gray keeps all eyes on the screen, while a few signature details give the room its personality:

  • Starfield ceiling: Fiber-optic stars set into 1-inch black fabric-wrapped acoustical panels
  • Illuminated movie art: Fabric-printed images on knife-edge wood frames, floating 1 inch off the wall inside LED edge-lit acrylic surrounds
  • Acoustic walls and millwork: Dark gray fabric-wrapped panels, plus custom pilasters with backlit 3form inserts
  • Seating and flooring: Black leather Elite HTS recliners and Kane Carpet

With the lighting dialed from cool white to blood red, the same room shifts from sleek screening room to full fright night. And because the artwork is replaceable, the theater can trade its current lineup of haunted dolls and demonic nuns for a new collection without changing its architecture.

Picture and Control

A Barco Bragi 4K HLD RGB LED projector, professionally calibrated by Barco field engineer David Robledo, fills a 150-inch Stewart Filmscreen WallScreen 2.5 in a native 2.37:1 scope format, with video processed by a madVR Envy Extreme. Kaleidescape Strato serves the movie library, Control4 runs the room, and WattBox handles power management.

When the stars come up, and the lights go down, the room disappears. What remains is the film, and a JBL Synthesis system designed to place every sound exactly where the filmmaker intended. It is a theater built for horror fans, with sound ready for whatever they choose to watch next, on Halloween night and every night after.
