Hands On With the SVS SB-5000 R|Evolution Subwoofer

Find out if SVS’s latest sub delivers the same power that defines the rest of its lineup.

The folks at SVS sent me their latest subwoofer to test, and I could barely contain my excitement. Over the past decade, I’ve reviewed most of their new releases, so when I heard they were introducing the SB-5000 R|Evolution, I couldn’t wait to try it out. I wondered if it would deliver the same earth-shattering, face-melting awesomeness that defines the rest of the SVS lineup. I set off to find out.

Unboxing

The SB-5000 arrived in a massive brown cardboard box. Inside was a glossy piano black cube snuggled in a sea of white foam. Once I hefted it out of the box (a two-person job, by the way), I admired its imposing presence.

  • Dimensions (with grille): 18.3 inches (H) x 17.8 inches (W) x 19.5 inches (D)
  • Driver: 15-inch-long throw woofer (sealed design)
  • Weight: 102.1 lbs.

This subwoofer isn’t a compact cube for a bookshelf; it’s a serious, no-nonsense component worthy of pairing with premium surround or 2-channel systems. I connected it to my trusty NAD M10 streamer and a pair of massive Polk Audio SDA towers.

Installation

I powered up the SB-5000, launched the SVS app on my phone, and it immediately recognized the subwoofer via Bluetooth. A firmware update popped up, and I simply laid my phone on top of the glossy cabinet while it updated flawlessly. The beast then rebooted, and I left most settings at default since I was managing bass through the M10.

I re-ran Dirac Live calibration on the M10 and experimented with crossover points, eventually settling on 120 Hz. That setting seemed to hand off the low end perfectly to the SB-5000.

I cued up a few tracks, including “Madness” by Muse, “Lose Yourself” by Eminem, and “Warehouse” by Dave Matthews Band. As the first notes hit, I could feel the room vibrate. The bass was deep, clean, and distortion-free, no matter how loud I cranked it. The SB-5000 proved to be an incredible companion to my SDA tower speakers.

The SB-5000 is built like a tank. Available in Black Ash or Piano Gloss, it ships with screw-on rubber feet to ensure it won’t walk across the floor. The app control is intuitive, and its built-in DSP is excellent if you’re not managing bass at the component level. SVS’s app user interface is consistent across its entire product line, making setup a breeze.

Review: SVS Ultra Evolution Pinnacle Tower Speakers

SVS continues to prove they’re masters of specialization — they’ve long focused on subwoofers, and it shows. Even as it expands into other products like loudspeakers, its core focus on keeping the main thing the main thing radiates through every product.

Final Report

The SVS SB-5000 is a masterclass in subwoofer design. It’s powerful, clean, easy to integrate, and built with obsessive attention to detail. SVS remains a brand that goes “two inches wide and two miles deep” in everything they do. Is $2099 a lot to pay for a subwoofer? If you love quality, low-end, and bass that punches you right in the chest, it’s a bargain. I can’t wait to see what they come out with next.
