For lighting fixture manufacturer Cerno and lighting design studio Siemon & Salazar, the ocean has always been an endless source of inspiration. The shifting quality of coastal sands and light was drawn from when designing and creating the Sona sconce, which is the latest collaboration between Cerno and Siemon & Salazar.
At the right time of day, light pierces through the water, creating a pristine and transparent scene. Later in the day, the water often reflects light in a shimmering pattern that is mesmerizing, but hard on the eyes. The light emitted from the Sona delivers a different experience from every angle, which is beautiful and an homage to the ever-changing coastline.
The nautical aesthetic is a motif that shows up in many of Cerno’s designs. Although more subtle in this fixture than some of its other lights, the porthole look feels very at home in the Cerno collection. The raw brass strap carries the warmth of something handled and worn. The solid wood backplate anchors the piece, hand-worked to expose the rich depth of the grain.
The glass is sand-cast; intentionally imperfect and unique. A surface the light can move across and pass through. The result is a quality of light that mimics nature, warm and diffuse. The kind of illumination that shifts a room’s mood without calling attention to itself — which is exactly what good lighting should do.
