Firewalla has released Firewalla App version 1.68, featuring the new AmneziaWG VPN Server as its centerpiece. The update also delivers smarter device protection, a refreshed app interface, expanded time controls, and advanced network management tools.
The AmneziaWG VPN Server is a WireGuard-based protocol designed for speed, reliability, and privacy — even on networks that block traditional VPNs. Unlike standard WireGuard, which can be easily detected and restricted, AmneziaWG obfuscates traffic by disguising it as common UDP protocols. This allows users to bypass restrictive network policies while maintaining high performance. While the obfuscation may use slightly more bandwidth and run marginally slower than standard WireGuard, it excels in environments where VPN access would otherwise fail.
Firewalla’s VPN Server now supports OpenVPN, WireGuard, and AmneziaWG protocols. On Firewalla Gold Series devices, AmneziaWG can perform 1.5–2x faster than OpenVPN, and it only modifies packet headers with “junk” data to obfuscate traffic — leaving performance mostly intact. This beta feature requires Firewalla Box version 1.982 or higher, with full VPN Client support and network/MTU customization planned in future updates.
Features include:
- Enhanced Device Protection: App 1.68 strengthens Device Active Protect, introducing Default and Strict modes, automatic device isolation when paired with Firewalla AP7, and the ability to reset the learning process on eligible devices. Users gain more granular control over security policies, improving overall network safety and device management.
- Streamlined App Experience: The refreshed app features a cleaner bottom navigation bar for Home, Devices, and Alarms. Customizable avatars simplify user identification, while rules and shortcuts are now more accessible. Expanded time controls allow users to monitor internet activity, create app group limits, and enforce usage restrictions with enhanced Disturb features that support time-based disruptions and additional target types.
- Advanced Network Tools: AmneziaWG VPN Server creates a local VPN network where connected devices are fully manageable. Users can view network flows, receive alarms, and apply rules to either the entire VPN network or individual devices. On-demand activation ensures devices automatically connect to the VPN when on cellular or Wi-Fi networks, while exceptions can be set for trusted SSIDs. Advanced users can adjust MTU values per client profile for optimized connections.
Firewalla supports up to 25 VPN clients on standard production Boxes and up to 200 clients on Gold Pro devices in beta or early access. Profiles can be shared via QR code or configuration file, ensuring easy setup across devices while maintaining strict limits to prevent simultaneous profile misuse.
Firewalla App 1.68 is available now to Beta users on iOS via TestFlight and on Android through Google Play Beta. Features require Box version 1.982 or higher and are compatible with Orange, Gold Series, and Purple Series Beta devices. Users can join the Beta program through Settings > Advanced > Beta Program.
